Biography

Johannes Guth was born in 1823 to a cloth maker named Leonhard Guth in Frankenthal, Circle of the Rhine, Bavaria.[1] [2]

Johannes, back then being a dayworker, illegaly immigrated to America in 1848/49.[3] In 1850 John was living in the house of Abraham Mees.[4] In 1851, John's parents and his brother Leonhard Guth, also immigrated to the US. Leonhard lived in Pomeroy as well.

Until 1870 John and his wife Elizabeth, who have been living in Pomeroy, Ohio, at least since 1860,[5] had at least seven children:[6]

  • John (* around 1850, only in 1860 census[5])
  • Elizabeth (* around 1854)
  • Leonard (* around 1855)
  • Rahena (* around 1858, only in 1860 census[5])
  • Andrew (* around 1862)
  • Mary (* around 1864)
  • Catherine (* around 1866)

In 1899 John's wife Elizabeth died.[7] The next year he was living together with the family of his daughter Catherine, also with his son Andrew.[8] In April 1910, shortly after the death of Catherine's husband John Whipple,[9] John was living with the family of his daughter Mary.[10]

John Sr. died in June 1910 – death record says he died of "senility" – aged 86 and half a year.[11]

Research notes

The claim that the person born in Frankenthal is identical to the person dying in Columbus, Ohio, is backed up by John's death record, that states his father as "Lenhard Good". [11] Additonally the death record of his daughter Mary states "Frankenthal, Germany" as birthplace of her father.[12]

The 1910 census record claims that John only entered the country in 1860,[10] which is unlikely due to his son John being born in 1850 in Ohio already.[5]

Also there is a marriage record of John Guth marrying Elizabeth Eisenhauer on 25 September 1853.[13] which would be just in time for having their daughter Elizabeth, but definitely too early for John born around 1850. The death records of all children still being alive at the time of the 1870 census, state their mother's surname as Reeser, Reiser, Rieser, Griesen, Grieser or Greuser,[14] while the her gravestone has "Reiser" on it.[15] This implies that John, the first son, either was born illegitimately or was from a previous marriage of either John Guth or Elizabeth. In the later case she might have been married to an Eisenhauer before and John was his son. There is a John Eisenhauer born around 1849 in Ohio living in Pomeroy at the time of the 1880 census.[16]

The church marriage record of John Guth and Elizabeth Eisenhauer also reveals the two witnesses Georgius Ulrich and Joannes Grieser. The first was also a witness at Leonhard's wedding in autmn 1856.[17]
