Biography

John was born at 65 George Street, Bradford, Yorkshire on 7 June 1869 to a widow of almost two years, Margaret Clark. On his birth certificate, his father is named as Michael Clark, a deceased outdoor labourer, and Margaret's late husband.

In his infancy, John moved with his mother and siblings to Pontefract, where the family had lived up until Michael's death. There, in late 1870, John's mother remarried to Patrick Haley. John then took the Haley surname, which he used for the rest of his life, and was named in all further records as Patrick's son.

John was raised in Whitwood alongside his siblings. In the 1891 census, his occupation was given as a flint bottle blower.

In 1899, John married Margaret Duffy who, like him, was the child of an Irish immigrant. Together, they had two sons and one posthumous daughter.

At the time of the 1901 census, John worked as a general labourer while living with his mother, wife, and children in Castleford. John passed away in the Pontefract registration district in 1903.
