Biography

Ted Burns was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

Early Years

As a youthful14-year-old, Edward William Burns ventured with his father up to the Mine camps in Queensland. The attached link leads us to a group of letters written and sent by E.W. Burns to his good friend, William Johnstone during the years 1883 to 1892. A great read! The Ted Burns Letters

Spent his early years' mining in Queensland

  • Victory Gold Mining Company Limited, Charters Towers, Qld; February 14th 1895 - Letter of Reference: Employed as Assistant Amalgamator for the past Fifteen months;
  • Venus Mill, Millchester, Charters Towers, Qld; December 5th 1896 - Letter of Reference: Employed as Feeder at the mine for the (9) nine months preceding November 1895.
  • Walter Scott Gold Mining Company, Cangai, NSW; May 15th 1896 - Letter of Reference: Employed as Amalgamator for the past six (6) months;
  • Pinnacles Gold Mine, Limited, Boyd, NSW; November 29th 1897 - Letter of Reference: Employed as Labourer during the erection of the Battery, for five months; and Batteryman during the past seven months;
  • Lachlan Gold Fields, Limited, Forbes, NSW; August 12, 1899 - Letter of Reference: Employed for the last eighteen months as Battery Engine Driver and Amalgamator;
  • Issued 'Miner's Right' No. 243, on September 21st, 1900. In force until March 20th 1901.

Residence

Sign the contract to purchase 'all that house and land known as "Alderside" and situated at Tinana Street Haberfield near Sydney aforesaid at the price of One Thousand Three Hundred and Fifty Pounds'

Occupation

Became a Wool and skin Buyer

  • Soap factory to Frank (his brother)
  • He bought a Tannery at Botany in Sydney;
  • then he went to Narrabri (NSW) to buy wool and skins and sold them
  • used to come home (to Sydney) every 3 weeks or so by train

  • “The building on the corner of Doyle and Tibbereena Streets is part of the original property and was used as business premises by E W Burns, and Cec. Myers for many years followed by George Branscombe.”

Funeral

Died on the 27th April 1948

  • Cremated and his Ashes are located at the Rookwood Gardens Crematorium
  • Edward and Flo's ashes are located at Rookwood Memorial Gardens at sites 174 TT & 175 TT
