Biography

John was born in 1861. He passed away in 1935. John's father died when he was 4 years old, his mother died when he was 9 years old. He was raised in an orphanage until he was 18. He was in a boarding house in Knoxville when he was 19 in 1880 census. After a January marriage in 1882 the Browns left Tennessee, emigrated to Oregon age 21 wife was 16. (At a Brown family reunion it was said the marriage was 1/29/1881 and in July of 1881 they traveled to Oregon, arriving in San Francisco, then by boat to Portland and settled near Salem. A baby girl died at birth there - strangled by the umbilical cord.) First to Hepner or Hermiston area where 3 children were born between 1883 and 1887. By 1889 they had moved to Dallas area, had 3 more children between 1889 and 1893. Finally by 1895 to Monroe, OR area where the rest of the children were born, except for Francis who was born in hops field in a tent in Eugene, OR in June of 1909. John and Margaret had 18 children, 2 of which died as infants. John was the "Hop boss" when hops were grown in the location of Auzten Stadium in Eugene, Oregon
