He was sub-postmaster at Lissan Post Office for many years.
She passed away 26 May 1978 at Mid-Ulster Hospital, having been ill for four years. The funeral was to Claggan churchyard. She was survived by a son, a daughter, 14 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, a brother Cecil Bates, and sister Mrs. Martha Faulkner. The chief mourners were:
