Untangling Elizabeths Fulton

Today is the birthday of my ancestor Elizabeth Fulton. To mark the day I was going to tell others in my family that she is the half sister of Robert Fulton, inventor of the steamboat.

Before I did I checked Robert Fulton in Wikipedia (Fulton-935). He’s listed as brother of Elizabeth (Fulton-4742), but she married the wrong guy. I found another Elizabeth (Fulton-3091) that married the right guy, John Moore, has birth info that matched what my mother recorded, and is the mother of my ancestor Robert Moore.

But my confusion and unease remain. Both Elizabeths have fathers named Robert Fulton. The father of my Elizabeth lived in North Carolina (and from Find a Grave likely died there). The father of the steamboat inventor was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the same region the Moore family lived.

I understand there could have been two women named Elizabeth Fulton and, I guess, more likely John Moore, himself 21, likely married the 32 year old rather than the 15 year old (though that’s not impossible).

One missing piece is how do we know the elder Elizabeth came from North Carolina? Another might be how we know there are two Elizabeths Fulton in Lancaster County in 1774? I guess what I’m really looking for is assurances before I rip out the Fulton records in the database I inherited from my mother. She was usually accurate, but never recorded sources. I can see how this one confused her.

Elizabeth and Robert Fulton’s are ubiquitous!

My roots are in Westmoreland Co., PA, so no connection with Robert of Steamboat fame. Consequently my research notes would not be helpful at all.

I wish you the best of luck.

PS

It turns out we are very, very distantly related: 17th cousins. But, not through the Fulton line.

I am a descendant of Elizabeth Fulton-4742, sister of the famous Robert Fulton. Their father only married once, so there are no half-siblings.  The famous Robert Fulton only had one son, but that son never married and had no children, so there are no descendants of Robert Fulton named Fulton.  This Fulton family also had no connection with North Carolina as far as I know.

Regarding John Moore, there is also a coincidence here,  My Elizabeth Fulton Scott had a daughter named Elizabeth Scott who married a John Moore!  But they were married in either Washington County or Ohio, and they lived and died in Ohio.

There are many, many Fulton families.  There were several in Lancaster County, PA that have still not been completely sorted out.  There was a wonderful group of Fulton researchers who produced the Fulton Family Newsletter.  Fortunately Family Search has these newsletters online--check their catalog and/or books listings.  The newsletters cover Fultons all over the country.

Me again.  I would even question how a girl born in North Carolina would marry a guy in Chester Co., PA in the 1740s.  Girls didn't travel much except with their families.  John Moore could have traveled to N.C. but then they would have married in N.C.  More research needed??  Of course, there are always exception to the way things were normally done.
