The US Black Heritage Project works on profiles for those enslaved in the U.S. across all times in history, the descendants of those slaves, as well as Americans of African descent.

Some of our goals are to add, connect, and honor members of the African-American community as well as welcoming new WikiTree members and helping them to connect to their ancestors.

If you are a WikiTree member, have signed the Honor Code, and would like to join us, please:

**Answer below** with what activity(s) you would like to help us with and which project team(s) you would like to be on.

Do you want to help, but you can't commit to regular activity? Follow the black_heritage tag and watch for posts from us asking for help on specific tasks and projects.

Want an easy task you can do now? Please add the African-American sticker to all of your profiles from this community. This will help us honor them, work on them, and watch our number of profiles grow. African-American Sticker

Thanks so much and we hope to hear from you soon!

Not an enslaved person but indentured, my ancestor was from the first ship at Jamestown Colony The White Lion. My ancestors’ names were Mr. and Mrs. Diogo Gonwelão and son João. They arrived in 1619.

The Heritage Exchange Team is a great team to connect with: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:US_Black_Heritage:_Heritage_Exchange_Program

We work on identifying descendants of enslaved people and connecting members to their ancestors.  We work on creating profiles of enslaved who lived on Plantations, who were listed on Slave Manifests,  who were named in inventories and wills of Slave Owners and much more. Feel free to contact Elaine (Weatherall-96), coordinator or Gina (Pocock-248) team leader, if you are interested.

Your team does amazing work!
I would like to volunteer  for heritage exchange, but also willing to work on other projects. I have done several profiles already and want to learn more.
Thanks, Vickie! I've just sent you a message.

I have two questions. I have a will for a profile that list some slaves. I have created a profile for each. I also added the , now do I also put the African-American Sticker on the will page also and do I need to upload the document? The other is what is considered a plantation? I have a profile that has about 30 slaves and quite a bit of land. Would this be considered a plantation, even though I don't know the name of plantation?

Hi Vickie - The African-American Sticker only goes on the profiles of people with US Black heritage. If you created a separate Free Space Page for the Will, you link it back to the Slave owner whose will it is. If you have the Source for the Will then link it to all the profiles created from it.

The Plantation team is creating plantations that have at least 40 enslaved OR if the owner had several small plantations, then we will document them as a group. I will PM you and you can send me the info you have. Otherwise, you can create a Free space page called: "The Slaves of..." and put the 30 enslaved on there. Then link that page back to the slave owner's profile. Be sure to add the USBH category and the Slave category on that page. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions regarding this.

Thank you for helping to document the enslaved!

Gina Jarvi

I'm guessing this would be my niche... I've been wanting to start cataloguing some of the people I've seen referenced in my research in the Chatham County, NC area, pre-1890.

May I please be included in the team, so I know who to ask before mucking something up?  Thanks!
Sure Loretta. I will private message you and we can figure out how best to get you started.
Hi, could I be added to make profiles for enslaved persons listed in my enslaver ancestors wills with the location and date of the will?

I have made tags at ancestry, but I would like to have the info in places that don't require a subscription.

For example, I have slaver ancestors named Holloway, Farthing, Emigh, Eighmy, Bledsoe, Terrell, Perry, and Truelove.

Thank you
Hi Rebecca,

Sure. We have a Path program that will help you with that work. I will message you on how to join the project.
Terry's and Perry's, we have those in common!

I want to add information about my enslaver ancestors in order to assist Black genealogists in finding their own ancestors.

That's great! Are you interested in joining the project?

If not, a great place for information is our Heritage Exchange Portal.

Hello!

I recently came across these indexes of manumissions from Frederick County, MD.

Link 1

Link 2

I'm unsure where to start with this in wikitree but I have had some success locating some of the people through my ancestry account.  However, I don't like the idea of information being behind ancestry's paywall.  I would really love to join the project and work my way through these documents, creating and linking profiles. I will likely need some support to start as I am new to wikitree, but I'm raring to go and a quick learner!  I'm also very interested in volunteering for the Family Builders project team.  Thank you all for everything you do!

Warm regards,

Sarah

I'll send you a message about joining the project!

About Ancestry - if you use the WikiTree Sourcer, you can create citations from Ancestry that contain both a link to the source behind the paywall and a "sharing" source that gives you access to the basic information outside of the paywall.

I have been working on the Chatham county, North Carolina area and both free communities and slave profiles. I never did get joined up to a project group. Can you help me?

I work a lot with New England states’ town histories (with vital records included). Often there’s a list of “ Negros” many without surnames. I would love to create profiles but have not done so. Can you direct me to the standards for creating profiles and especially naming. They are not necessarily enslaved people. Is there a relevant project I can join?

Having just delved into documenting a group of enslaved persons, and with more on the horizon, and after the wonderful help from Elaine, I figured it's time to join. Profile Improvement team is where I'd hang out.

Yes, I would like to join.   I have done several profiles already, for example Peter Hanger, and want to learn more.  Please add me to the appropriate team, perhaps the Heritage Exchange Portal?  Here is an example of what I have been doing and perhaps you can suggest the team. Profile for Peter Hanger  profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hanger-609 and his associated page  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Slaves_of_Peter_Hanger%2C_Virginia

Thank you.

I am the team leader for the Florida and Georgia State Teams.  We sorely need people interested in these states to join our teams.  There is an overwhelming amount of work to do.
If you are interested in joining a team, please contact me, or follow the instructions on the US Black Heritage Project to join (see below).  There are many areas that the project covers including African-American Notables, Plantations and the Enslavers and Slaves, African-American cemeteries, One Place Studies such as African-American settlements, etc.
The work on this project is extremely satisfying and fun.  We have awesome people working on the project who are supportive, knowledgeable, and wonderful collaborators.  Please join us!

I would like to join the Florida project. I have been working to document my ancestor enslavers and have information to contribute. In addition to the 1850 and 1860 censuses, I have documented the 1830 and 1840 censuses where possible and have information about the family group that may be helpful because they owned multiple properties.
That's wonderful, Holly. We would love to have you join the team.  Please read the welcome mat page and follow the steps there to join:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:US_Black_Heritage:_Welcome_Mat

Looking forward to your participation.

I guess I did this in the wrong place initially. Gina convinced me to join, even though I don't have much to offer, but I guess every little bit helps.

Nice, thanks for joining, Paul. Every bit does help!

I would like to join the project!  I'm interested in helping others as well as finding out about my husband's ancestor who is listed as mulatto and black on census records.  This ancestor supposedly had a Native American mother according to family but my husband has a percentage of Benin and Togo (Africa) DNA.  I would like to join the South Carolina Project.  Thank you and excited to become a part of reconnecting families!

This is a great project! Here's what I have, and what I can work on.

1. I've just added the A-A sticker to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Unknown-556471. The photo of the article on that page explains who she was (formerly enslaved).

2. My 2nd great grandparents were plantation owners and slaveholders in Louisiana. First Plaquemines Parish, then St. Mary's. I've written up all of my research about that here: https://okh.medium.com/teenage-mom-and-plantation-mistress-3a49376721de?sk=b53778054142cb4dda0523030e4fae75

3. Finally, see the photo at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Huff-5728. The photo was commissioned by Robert Huff so it is surely of one of his daughters. The challenge is to learn who the nanny was working for the family.

Thanks!

Hello, I'm a new member and would like to join the Virginia team and the Black Churches team when it begins. I heard that there is a "path" for newbies. But, I can't find it here. Could you help? I've added the African-American sticker to family members. Thank you! Hilary

Hi Hilary, Welcome to WikiTree! You have done an amazing job figuring things out so quickly. I've sent you a message on joining the project. I'll make sure our Virginia Team leader knows about your interest too. Emma

Greetings! My husband's ancestors, Samuel Harper and Jane Hamilton were part of The Famous Eleven during the Missouri Raid lead by abolitionist, John Brown. I'm not sure if they would be considered Notables. The Battle of the Spurs on Wikipedia only mentions "eleven slaves"; no names given.

Hello, I would like to join this project in some capacity. I have a brother who is of African-American descent, as well as a first cousin and at the very least I am adding the African-American sticker to their ancestors' profiles.

I am descended from a prominent Confederate slave owner. The locations are South Carolina and Mississippi. I am not sure what project team to join.
by Suzanne Lowe G2G6 (6.2k points)
We don't have a Mississippi team yet, but the South Carolina team always needs help!
Hi Suzanne,

Excellent! I sent you a PM.

My paternal Grandmother was Irma Perry and I was on another site and saw her Mother's name Emma Hall listed as part of The USBH project. Being on Wikitree for many years I stopped adding and helping because I had too many trees to keep up with so I deleted the major one with the most relatives. I had reload my Perry Gedcom...and I am ready to start again. I can help with anything that is needed and necessary.
by Katherine Johnson G2G1 (1.2k points)
Are you interested in joining the project?
So glad to hear from you, Katherine! Adding your tree on WikiTree would be a huge help to us and adding the African-American Sticker as you go so people can easily find the profiles. Let us know if we can help you in any way.
