Biography

Hugh C. Turner was born about 1832 on his parents' farm in Jefferson Township, Ashe County, North Carolina, USA. He was the son of Andrew Turner, 1782–1864, and his wife, Sarah "Sallie" (Unknown) Turner, 1804–1870. On the 1850 US Census, the first to name wives & children, he was recorded as Hugh Turner, age 32, single, living with his father: Andrew Turner, 68, mother: Sarah Turner, age 46, and 6 full siblings. They were living on Andrew Turner's farm in Ashe County, North Carolina, USA. ^[1]

Hugh C. Turner was a veteran of the US Civil War: he fought for his state and the Confederacy as a private, 1st N C Cavalry Regiment. Shortly before the war began, he married Mary Ann Cox, only 16 years old, and they had a son: Marshall Elmer Turner, Jan. 1861–1937. Mary Ann did not survive the conflict and subsequent privations experienced in the defeated South.

Hugh C. Turner remarried to Miss Mary Ann "May" Burkett, May 1843–1925, on 6 August 1966 in Ashe County, North Carolina, USA. ^[2] They had 3 sons: Daniel Winston Turner, 1869–1955; William Walter Turner (1873-1946); and John Andrew Turner, 1875–1955. ^[3]

Hugh C. Turner passed away in September 1876 on his farm in Ashe County, North Carolina, USA. No Find A Grave Memorial has been found for him.
