Biography

John Taylor and Lucy Burge moved to Amelia County, Virginia, before 1743 where he bought a 900-acre established plantation with houses, barns, stables, and mill. At least three of their eight children were born to the couple in Amelia County.

In 1749 they sold the Amelia County plantation and moved to Richland County in South Carolina. He purchased 300 acres in Back Swamp on the Bluff Road near the Congaree River from John Pearson. Among his neighbors were Simon Hirons, Philip Raiford, William Howell, and Peter Wyche.

At first he was a cattleman as open range herding was a lucrative occupation while plantation agriculture was being developed. He gradually increased his holdings to own several plantations. When he died he left to his heirs 1,232 acres of land.

NOTE: Cannot find a source for a son John born to John Taylor and Catherine Pendleton, although a birth date of 1727 is possible, as it would place him between Isabella, b. 1725 and James, b. 1729. Gravestone indicates he was a Col in NC Militia, Revolutionary War. See wife's bio for more insight into marriage date and children.
