Research Notes

The Samuel Reid Conundrum: "According to The Reid History written in 1936, “....When out alone one night another brother, Samuel, was attacked by a mob of Roman Catholics, for whose separate schools we are now being taxed, and would have been murdered had it not been for the timely arrival of a woman who saved him. He died some time later, it was thought from the abuse they had given him.....”" [3]

This must have happened in Ireland, as Ontario did not start collecting taxes for Catholic Schools until 1855, and then it was collecting on behalf of the Catholic Schools[4]

The Rev. William N. Falkiner indignantly characterized emigration from this parochial union as follows: "Several very respectable Protestant families have left this, much disgusted at the situation they were in, unprotected from lawless aggression of mobs, and deserted by Government; such were their complaints; they went to Canada."[5]

Email From A cousin: I am working on a Samuel Reid (abt.1818-) and Eliza(Armstrong) Ramsbottom (abt.1820-abt.1889) with 3 daughters, Anne born 1830 in Ireland, Eliza (possibly Eliza (Reid) Daniels (1833-1921)) born in 1832 in Canada and Deborah born in 1834 in Canada. Samuel has died before 1840 and Eliza(Armstrong) Reid (abt.1820-abt.1889) has married James Ramsbottom (1821-) or Ramesbottom. If her age at death is correct in this death record from 1899, then she was born about January 1809 in Ireland. I've found her daughter Mary Ramsbottom (1842-1909) born 1842 and Harriet born 1848. It's Mary's daughter, Hattie Vanatta who in a 1918 Canada-US border crossing mentions an Aunt Eliza Daniels in London, Ontario. This is why I think it's Mary Armstrong (abt.1820-abt.1889) who married our Samuel Reid (abt.1818-). <snip> I am working on Mary's Ramsbottom sons to see if I can find any further connections. But I think Samuel and Mary (or Eliza if she goes by that too, but I haven't found that anywhere as yet) should be born about 1809/1810. As soon as I can confirm her sons and their spouses and see if there is any mention of aunts and uncles that could give us more clues, I will share with the list. Otherwise, check out my Ancestry tree and see what you think. I've put the daughter Eliza in as a POSSIBLE for the time being but I think she is going to fit in there nicely. I think that it's possible that whoever informed on her death record listing her mother's name as Eliza was incorrect or as I've suggested she went by Mary Eliza Armstrong or Eliza Mary Armstrong. I'm convinced, especially with the DNA connections that we're on the right track, but would like to hear from the rest of you as to what you think when you look at all of this. Tammy
