About the Project

The Reed Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Reed name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Reed name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Reeds), by time period (18th Century Reeds), or by topic (Reed DNA, Reed Occupations, Reed Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Please consider adding to Category: United States, Reid Name Study - A New Jersey, Reid Name Study.

REID, JOHN (1655-1723), Surveyor General of the Province of East Jersey, came from Scotland to Monmouth County, NJ. Reids continue to reside in the Middlesex and Monmouth County area. I was able to prove descent from REV WAR "Fighting John" Reid, d 1814 (why "Fighting John?" he served 1776 to 1783, to join the SAR. My great grandmother was a Reid.

If you would like to work on various Reed/Reid profiles please go to the different list and work on those if you need to add more feel free to add to categories. If anyone would like to volunteer to look for Reed/Reid’s that not yet in name study we could use your help. Let’s have fun doing the Reed/Reid Profiles.

Hey Billie

I didn’t know you were the PL for this ONS. Sign me up please. I have a bunch of Reids from Georgia, Arkansas and Pennsylvania. A couple of Reeds, too.

Donna,

I added you. Hope you can add your people to the group.

Please count me in for the Reed study. I'm descended from Hans Georg Rieth whose line is also known by Reed, Rith, Riedt, Ried, etc. My Reeds started out in America as Schoharie Palatines who arrived in New York about 1710 from Kaiserslautern, Germany, and had moved on to Pennsylvania by 1722. This was a large extended family in Berks and Schuylkill counties for over 100 years.
Add me to the study please. From what I have been able to find sofar that there was at least 9 different Reade, Reed, Reid, Reade, Reed family's that imagrateted to America. I have done Y-DNA so the line back is my father grandfather Charles Wesley Reid, William Eabor Reid, Palmer Reed/Reid, Henry Reed, Joseph Reed. Daniel Reed (the grandfather of Susan B Anthony), Joshua Reed, Joseph Read, Israel Read, John Read, Sr b1598-1685 then his father William Read Folkestone, Kent, England. John Read, Sr also had a uncle William Read that married Chapman that emigrated to the America about the same time.

I want to see if I am in that line. Did you do DNA. I am from Michigan settlers Reeds from Redford Mi.

Mary Ellen REED-Scott Mary Ellen Reed (1881-1945)

Hey y'all! Would love to join this project as Mary Ellen REED (b: 15 Sep 1881-12 Feb 1945) is my brick wall. She says she was born in Arkansas (prob in or around Baxter County) and died in Stillwell, Cherokee, Oklahoma. She variously lists her parents as being born in AR or IL.

DNA matches tie her ancestry to CANNON COUNTY, TN but not to one specific son or the other of JAMES HUGH REED (1784 Somerset, PA - 16 MAR 1880 Cannon County, TN) although JOHN TAYLOR REED (1825-1900) and GEORGE I REED (1826-bef 1870) are the strongest contenders. Neither wife has verified DNA ties either, as both of their mothers surnames (Cooper & Kearly) also regularly show up in my matches. (Southern endogamy?)

She apparently had a brother (maybe half), William James REED (1869-bef JUN 1901-Muskogee, OK) who married Margaret Rosa Belle BAILEY. A sister (maybe half), Milley Alice | Polly REED (Mar 1873, MO - bef 1904, Ft Gibson, Muskogee, OK) who married William Monroe BAILEY. And possibly a half sister or aunt, Marth M REED (8 OCTOBER 1892 • Joplin, Jasper, MO - 31 JUL 1991 • Irving, Dallas, TX) who married Charles Clinton CARTER.

Earliest death records on file in OK is 1908. Mary Ellen's death certificate says parents unknown.

Let me know what I need to further add, --Cheri

Hello, My name is William Reed. My MDA is James Reed b.1772 Va. and died 1827. I believe that he lived in Loudoun Co. Va. I show two different James Reed's in the 1810 Loudoun Co. Census. I'm not positive which one he is. His widow Charlotte (Francis) Reed is showing as head of household on the 1830 census. I have taken the Ychomosome tests for FamilyTreedna.com and Ancestry. I have records for some of his children in Loudoun Co and Clarke Co. Va. Also Montgomery and Frederick Co. Maryland.

Hi, here to add another Reid to the project. I have only made it back to 1818 so I'm not sure where my line originated from exactly.

If Reid is a variant, it doesn't get its own separate name study category, so shall I rename it or do you want to split it off? We are slowly going through name studies to address such issues. If it's a variant, the category should be [Category:Reids, Reed Name Study]. If it is its own study, then the category [Category:Reid Name Study] should remain as is.

Natalie,

I sent you message in regard to this question.

Billie

Question if we do Category:Reids, Reed Name Study then how do we name sub categories would it be Category:Reids, Scotland, Reed Name Study?
Or we could just lump Reids under Reids. That might be confusing in some locations. But like Scotland there are nobReeds just Reids. But some Scottish Reids became Reeds after migrating. So like with Andrews everyone is Andrew in Scotland and they are under Andrews but I explain on category that it’s Andrew in Scotland.
Steve Harris did some research and perhaps Reid needs its own study. The name has been around since around 1185.

If you want a new category please give me the link to the profile for that category. You need a profile for a category.
Sussex Reed Name Study with the same profile as the Kent one perhaps?
posted by Nicky Cunningham
If you want a particular sub category tell me the profile. It works better to start with a profile to make a new category
I'm researching the Reed family of Sedlescombe and Salehurst in Sussex, England. Some of the family migrated to the US in the 19th century so a broader research category than just this area.

If you can add a sub-category, I'll try to get all my research on the site.
