Biography

Relationship
Richard Heritage achieved the 15 For 15 award for completing 15 missions in our 2023 15 For 15 Challenge.

Richard Heritage was born at home outside of Syracuse, New York, on December 7, 1953. He is the son and only child of Robert Heritage, who delivered him, and Mary Kearney Heritage. In March, 1957, Richard moved with his family to Oberlin, Ohio. In July, 1963, he moved to Rochester, Michigan. There he took piano lessons, became an Eagle Scout, and ran cross country and track. He graduated from Rochester High School in 1971.

After an unfortunate first year at DePauw University, his father's alma mater, Richard attended Michigan State University, graduating in 1975. He later attended the University of Michigan, receiving a Master's degree in Library Science in 1978. In 1979 Richard moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where he worked at the Baltimore County Public Library. There he met Lynne Austin, whom he married in 1985.

In 1983 Richard changed careers, from librarianship to information technology, and went to work for the Department of Agriculture in Washington. He later worked for PRC, Inc. at NASA Headquarters and for Montgomery County (Maryland) Public Schools. In 1998 Richard and Lynne returned to Baltimore with their two young children, and Richard went to work for Johns Hopkins University, where he remained for over twenty years. For most of his career Richard worked with IBM mainframe computers, and later with the Linux operating system.

Dear Wikitreer:

my name is Cristina Corbellani and I’m Team Leader for the Italian Diaspora section of the Italy project on Wikitree. You are receiving this email because you expressed an interest in the Italian Diaspora. The aim of this part of the project is to identify the migrant Italians to connect their families of origin in Italy with their descendants abroad. We have specific resources for this purpose which are explicited here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Italian_Roots_Diaspora. If you are new to Italian genealogy or are not familiar on how to trace a migrant ancestor, I’d like to invite you to join us the next September 30th to October 2nd. On those dates we will doing the Source-a-Thon as Team Italy, a friendly competition in which we locate sources for as many unsourced profiles as we can over an extended weekend. But the important thing is that, whether you join the competition officially or not, or if you are joining another team (which you can do here if you like: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1463120/register-now-for-the-2022-source-a-thon ), if you drop by on the #Italy channel on Discord you’ll find almost always during those days someone ready to help you with your research, translations or resources websites. Or you can just drop by to say hello! We always have great fun during these events. Hoping to hear back from you soon, best regards, Cristina.

Hi!

This is Chris from the Italy Project. As part of the annual project check-in, can you fill in the project survey? This will let us know that you are still interested in the project and which teams you'd like to participate in.

Thanks and have a great day!

Hi Richard,

Have you ever considered participating in one of WikiTree's Connect-A-Thons? It's a great opportunity to add new profiles, whether they are extended family members or someone who fits into of one of your projects. The next one will run from Friday, April 22nd to Monday, April 25th.

If you are interested in participating, you can sign up in the G2G forum registration post at https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1392037/have-you-registered-for-the-april-2022-connect-a-thon-yet?show=1395381#c1395381 and add another badge to your collection. They ask you to join a team, so I invite you to join the Mid-Atlantic Team since I notice your maternal roots are in Pennsylvania and New York. You are not limited to adding profiles for only this region, of course. Like you, most of us have roots in many other regions and countries. Hope you'll consider joining the fun!

Hi, Star--

I have indeed considered the Connect-A-Thons and I'm sure I'll eventually take part, but not this time. I just have too much going on. (Plus connecting is hard, at least compared to Data Doctoring and sourcing!) Thanks for the kind invitation.

Richard.

Hi Richard

Thank you for participating in the Data Doctor weekly Challenge - for Orphan profiles. Every suggestion you cleared made our Tree that much better. The Data Doctor Team and the WikiTree community appreciates the work you are doing. Look forward to seeing join us for the next challenge.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working within the projects which coordinate them is essential.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus, whether time period, location, or topic. Read the goals and tasks of the project and join if it is a good fit.

Add the project tag to your Following list to be kept up to date on any activity that occurs for that project.

Can't find what you're looking for? Let me know, and I can make some suggestions! :-)

We've made a change in how the tutorials are sent to new members. Instead of weekly messages you can now work at your own pace, so this is the last message.

How is it going so far? Have the How-Tos been helpful or left you with questions?

We want to help! Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

PS Sometimes links don't work in emails. You can always find a link that works in the public comments on your profile.

Hi Richard,

It's time for your next stop on the guided tour!

This week, we'd like to show you How to Join in the Community. There's no shortage of opportunities to get involved through social media, G2G forum, and projects. Be sure to check out the One Name Studies Project to see if anyone has started a project for one of the surnames in your family. Don't see one? Follow the instructions for starting your own!

Please let me know if you have questions. :-)

Richard--

You've been here a week now, and we hope you enjoyed your first stop on your guided tour of WikiTree and were able to make good use of the things you learned.

Our next stop will give you some pointers on how to make your profiles stand out: How to Edit a Profile.

If the link doesn't work in your email, you can find it in the public comments on your profile page. Please let one of us know if you have questions! Just click the name above any comment, then ask in the comment section of that volunteer's page

Hi there! My name is Vicky (Freeth) Majewski and I am a WikiTree Mentor.

I'm just checking in to see how things are going. Are you enjoying WikiTree so far? Any questions? Any issues?

Feel free to contact me via my profile page. I am happy to help!

Welcome Richard!

You are now a confirmed member, and you can get started adding your family members. As we've said, WikiTree is quite different from other genealogy sites. So, we've put together a guided tour to help you learn how to use it. Your first stop is How to Start Climbing Our Tree.

Tomorrow, you'll hear from a Mentor who will check in to see how you're doing and answer any questions you might have.

Next week, you'll get another message with your next stop on the guided tour.

You can also meet some of our members by joining in the fun with our Question of the Week in the G2G forum: Were any of your ancestors involved in the American Indian Wars?

See you, Cindy

Hi and welcome to WikiTree!

WikiTree is different from other genealogy websites because our goal is to have one profile per person. That means we will all share ancestors and work together as a collaborative team! The Honor Code helps keep everything functioning smoothly as we work on our SHARED tree.

You should have received an email with links you can use to get started. Once you confirm your email address, you'll have an option to volunteer to add information to WikiTree. Begin with tags for your own profile. Tags are surnames, locations, concepts, etc. in which you're interested.

When you volunteer, one of our Greeters will confirm your membership. Then you'll be able to add to the tree!

We're really glad you're here!
