I have been a Melton/Milton Family researcher since I married into the clan in 1972. My Sylvester Family came to the United States from Sheffield, England, and their genealogy has been completed and printed.
I am researching other family lines but my journey up the Melton/Milton tree has been my main focus.
I am American by birth but my family lineage is British. I loved the family stories of England and was interested in my English Heritage. I chose the half American half British Heart as my avatar to express my appreciation of both my American and British origins.
I found myself consulting WikiTree many times in my research and decided to leave my work here for posterity. My primary reason is WikiTree’s emphasis on sourcing and biographies. I joined WikiTree in August of 2022.
I enrolled in the Orphan Trail program for instruction in data entry and research and have graduated OTI and OTII. The training was exceptional.
My OTI profiles were (1) George Powell (1850-1924) [Powell-496] (2) Jesse Inkley (1840-1886) [Inkley-117] (3) Margaret Pearse Wadge (1748-1794) [Pearse-424] and (4) Dr. William Lempriere (1760-1834) [Lempriere-58].
My OTII profiles were (1) Timothy Garthwaite (1606-1669) [Garthwaite-197] (2) Pentecost Doddridge MP (1570-1644) [Doddridge-107], (3) Thomas Harriot (1560-1621) [Harriot-60], and (4) Sackville Trevor MP (1567-1635) [Trevor-12].
The Melton/Milton immigrants to Virginia came through colonizing efforts at the Berkeley Plantation, not because of religious persecution. The immigrant ancestors, I have located are:
Henry Milton, Milton-2316, on the ship Lion to Roanoke Colony, in 1587.
Thomas Milton, Milton-2210, on the ship Margaret, in 1619.
Richard Milton, Milton-2191, on the ship Supply, in 1620.
Clement Milton, Milton-2190, on the ship Furtherance, in 1622.
Henry Milton, Milton-2209, on the ship David, in 1635.
Thomas, Richard, and Henry were brothers. Henry of Roanoke was an uncle and Clement was most likely a cousin.
John Milton [Milton-348] Suffolk to Virginia in 1720 [Christopher Milton Lineage]
Melton/Milton naming patterns. The names William, John, Thomas, Richard, Henry and, sometimes Anthony, are frequently given to the men of the Melton/Milton family.
Source Note: The family of William Melton [Melton-277] and his wife Ann Rice, descendants of Richard Milton of Ship Supply is discussed in: The Milton genealogy, 1636-1960 By Hugh Meglone Milton, Published 1960.[2]
