Cemeteries are among the most valuable of historic resources. They can serve as reminders of various settlement patterns, or they can reveal information about historic events, religions, lifestyles, and most importantly, our genealogy. Unfortunately, these cemeteries do not necessarily remain permanent reminders of our ancestors and past since they are subject to long-term deterioration, neglect, development activities and construction projects, and even vandalism and theft.

Volunteers in the Cemeterist Project are helping to preserve the world's cemeteries. Volunteers are currently needed for photography or indexing. You can help in any way that suits you! Will you join us?

Please click on the "Answer this post" button when responding and let us know in which geographical area you would like to work - Thank you!

Also, please join us in the Cemetery Challenges.

Robin,

My name is Pat Brunson-1754 & I am working on a Project  that's under the Umbrella of the War Between the States Project & got your name from my Project Leader Kreutzer-114 because I finally asked a question she couldn't answer. You got tagged because you cover cemeteries & images.

The cemetery is the internment site of 3,000+ CSA soldiers & is now a State Park run by MD ("temporarily" closed) & a monument & a memorial site run by the descendants of PLPOW.

I need to know what the ethics/guidelines are on uploading images of specific memorial plaques of interred Civil War Soldiers buried at Point Lookout, Baltimore, MD.

I have someone that is not a member of WikiTree, his mother is but I don't know her level is, who has gone out there as a favor for his mother who was helping me out. He took pictures, lots I hear, & talked to someone about the Memorial out there.

How do we get his pictures uploaded to the WikiTree for everyone to be able to use them? Do we have to upload between ourselves first off-line & then I upload to the WikiTree? Or would he go through his mother?

Do you have guidelines for this type of scenario explaining how pictures from England or France War Memorial Monuments are handled for someone out of country?
Hello Pat,

Please look for a private message from me.

Thanks,

Robin
Hello Pat,

is there any way I can reach out to you to see if you have a photo from Point Lookout with a particular name? My 2nd great grandfather died there while a POW.

Thanks,

Ann
Ann,

You can go to https://plpow.org/ & on the left side menu you will see "Names of Interred", this is what you are looking for. Let's hope your 2nd ggfather's name is listed there. The Union found 1 "unknown" soldier that they couldn't name so the gave him the "honor" of being the tomb of the unknown soldier out there. There is also a section at the bottom of the names of the interred page that has a list of men not on the monument. You might check for your ggfathers name there if he isn't on the rolls.

The only problem with the "1 unknown" is that according to the diaries kept by the prisoners themselves, the count the Union provides for the amount of "unknowns" is off by about 11,000 men. So, we will probably never know for sure who all is there, but the known names are all there.

I hope this helps.

Hello, I think I would like to join this group. I'm working on sort of a one place study for a cemetery located in Yuba County, California. It is an inactive historic cemetery and is kept locked up most of the time. It is generally not publicly accessible. I have obtained printed information about burials and grave plots from the caretakers that I'm digitizing and would like to have a place to put it all where it can be accessed for research. Is this what this group is for?

I would like to join this project specifically for Eastern Kentucky and Southwest Ohio. I will add tags to all profiles found and as I have noticed many small cemeteries in eastern Kentucky need to have categories created so they can be added to profiles.
