Trying to identify the father of my 4th great grandfather. Joseph Smith Conklin

Question

My 4th GreatGrandfather, Joseph Smith Conklin, was born in Champaign Co Ohio on 20  Sept 1826 and died inKinross, Keokuk, Iowa on 8Jan1900.  His father was William Conklin and his mother, Rebecca Anderson.  

There were several William Conklin's in that part of Ohio and I am trying to find the correct one and consequently, who William's father was.

The wife's name shows Gaines on the register for Iowa Grand Army of the Republic -- but I see multiple other references for Gano/Garno.

Joseph Smith Conklin was married to Martha Jane Gano.  

I thought that I had found the correct William Conklin and his father but unfortunately it was not the correct William Conklin.  

I thought that his middle ninitial was J. but in looking carefully at the application that Roberta filled out for his military pension, I believe that it is an Old English S.
