Henry Bryan's unit went through changes during the Civil War.  He was in Company E of the 3rd Virginia Infantry, a Union regiment because West Virginia did not exist yet.  It later became the 3rd West Virginia Infantry followed by the 3rd West Virginia Mounted Infantry in May 1863.  Henry Bryan was in Company E during all these changes.  In January 1864, the 3rd West Virginia Mounted Infantry was redesignated as the 6th West Virginia Calvary.  In this new calvary unit, Henry Bryan was now in Company C.  Henry Bryan had become a Corporal by the time of the redesignation.  He was captured in June of 1864 and sent to Andersonville.  The POW lists of Andersonville has him listed as a Corporal in the 6th West Virginia Calvary Company C and there is a second listing for him as a Corporal in the 3rd West Virginia Calvary Company E.  The later I know he was never in however this could have been a mistake due to the recent redesignation.  How should he be categorized with all these different units all stemming from one?
