Intriguing. This corrected parentage for Joseph Williams shows a family connection – through Nathaniel's mother, born Abigail Cloyes – to Sarah (Towne) Cloyce, Abigail's sister-in-law; she was the wife of Abigail's brother Peter. Sarah is the title character in the PBS dramatization of the Salem trials, Three Sovereigns for Sarah (1985); the role was played by Vanessa Redgrave. Sarah was the only one of the three Towne sisters [the others being Rebecca (Towne) Nurse and Mary (Towne) Esty] to survive... and was ultimately awarded the symbolic three sovereigns by a panel of three judges who sat her case after the trials had fallen into (well-deserved) disfavor. [The film has particular personal meaning for me not only because I have an ancestress who was a victim of the trials – Susannah (North) Martin – but also because I played a minor, but appalling, part in it: the role of the Rev. Nicholas Noyes of Salem Town.]
