John was born about 1826 in Arkansas. He was the son of George Wiles and Mary Miller. He married Melvina Melvina Stewart. They had 6 children.

He enlisted as a Private n Company B, 1st Regiment, Arkansas Infantry, 30-day unit in 1861. They mustered in Nov 19, 1861, and out in Dec 1861^[1].

It is unclear if he re-enlisted or what the circumstances were, but he is believed to have passed away in 1863.
