Biography

Elizabeth Jane Walker was born on 6 August, 1891, to Benjamin and Elizabeth (Slade) Walker, at Tynemouth, Northumberland, England, where she was baptized on 15 September, 1891^[1][2].

Elizabeth J. Walker, 9, and her parents, Elizabeth, 32, and Benjamin Walker, 30, Coal Miner Stoneman, were living in their own house on Coquet Street in North Gosforth, Tynemouth, Northumberland, at the time of the 1901 Census^[3].

At the time of the 1911 Census, Elizabeth Jane Walker, 20, was a visitor in the house of John Jabey, 43, Stoneman Below Ground Coalmine, and Florence Phillipson, both 33, and their children William, 9, John Thomas, 6, Isabella Jane, 4, and John Oswald, 2, at 4 Edwards Avenue, Longbenton, Forest Hall, Northumberland, England^[4].

Elizabeth Jane Walker, 22, daughter of Benjamin Hickman Walker, married Amos Johnson, 22, son of Thomas Johnson, at Gosforth, Northumberland, England on 22 March, 1913^[5].

Elizabeth was widowed on 18 November, 1915, when Amos died due to a fall of stone in a colliery accident at Hazlerigg Colliery.

Research Notes

An Elizabeth Jane Johnson, born 8 August, 1891, died in the 1st Quarter of 1972, aged 80, at Elstree, Hertfordshire, England^[6]. This Elizabeth Jane appears on the 1939 Register as married to a Charles Johnson[1]. Unless she remarried after husband Amos died, this is not our Elizabeth, even though the birthdates are very close.

The Elizabeth Jane Johnson who died on 10 December and was buried on 15 December, 1948, at Northumberland, is NOT our Elizabeth. Her Find a Grave Memorial (with a photo of her headstone which she shared with her husband) shows that her husband's name was William, and probate of her estate was granted 23 February, 1949, to a man named Adam Ormston Johnson[2]. The Elizabeth Hannah Johnson who was born in 1913 was NOT Elizabeth's child. I obtained a digital image of her registration of birth from GRO Online, and her parents were Thomas and Harriet (Walker) Johnson.
