Biography

Amos Johnson was born in early 1891 to Thomas and Jane Johnson at Benwell, Northumberland, England, where he was baptized on 10 February, 1891[1]. There is a registration of birth in the March Quarter of 1891 for an Amoes Johnson that is likely our Amos[2]

Amos Johnson, 22, son of Thomas Johnson, married Elizabeth Jane Walker, 22, daughter of Benjamin Hickman Walker, at Gosforth, Northumberland, England on 22 March, 1913[3].

Amos Johnson, 24, Hewer, was killed by a fall of stone at Hazlerigg Colliery, Northumberland, England, on 18 November, 1915, according to his "In Memorium" page at the Durham Mining Museum online site[[1]][4].

Research Notes

The 1911 Census recorded Amos Johnson, 20, born Newcastle, Coal Miner Putter, Nephew, living in Gosforth, Northumberland, with Thomas, 44, born On Northumberland, Kent, Coal Miner Hewer, and Elizabeth Johnson, 37, born Shinnigs Row, Durham, Wife, and their children Thomas, 14, Driver in Coal Mine Underground, Robert, 12, William, 10, John, 7, in School, all born Whickham, Durham, Mary, 5, born Newcastle, and Henry, 2, born Gosforth[5]. This Amos also appears as "Nephew" living with the same family on the 1901 Census in Gosforth. There is another Amos Johnson, with a father named Thomas, who appears on the 1891 - 1911 Censuses living at Stanhope, Durham, England. Not sure which one is correct (given the name of Amos's father on his registration of marriage), but it is possible his Uncle was mistakenly recorded as "father's name" on his registration of marriage, as this would put Amos and Elizabeth in the same location.

We have several possible Census records for Amos Johnson:

The 1891 Census recorded an Amos Johnson, 0, Sister? living on Stanley Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne, in the household of her? brother Thomas Johnson, 25, single, Coal Miner. All members of the household were reportedly siblings to head of house Thomas, and the household included Jane, 22, Housekeeper, John, 20, Coal Miner, Hannah, 18, Assistant Housekeeper, and Robert, 14, Coal Miner ("England and Wales Census, 1891," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:H9BR-H3Z : 8 May 2019), Amos Johnson in household of Thomas Johnson, Elswick, Northumberland, England, United Kingdom; from "1891 England, Scotland and Wales census," database and images, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : n.d.); citing PRO RG 12, Northumberland county, subdistrict, The National Archives of the UK, Kew, Surrey.).

The 1901 Census recorded an Amos Johnson, 11, born 1890 in Allendale, Northumberland, living with his father Thomas, 39, born Stanhope, Durham, married, but his wife isn't in the household, and Uncle Emerson, 38, Single, both Lead Miner's, and brother Wilfred, 8, born Stanhope, at Killhope, Stanhope, Durham, England ("England and Wales Census, 1901," database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XSZM-9MJ : 5 August 2022), Amos Johnson in household of Thomas Johnson, Stanhope, Durham, England, United Kingdom; from "1901 England, Scotland and Wales census," database and images, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : n.d.); citing subdistrict, PRO RG 13, The National Archives, Kew, Surrey.).

There is also an Amos Johnson, 21, Lead Ore Washer, Single, living with his father Thomas, 49, same profession and Thomas's wife Margaret, 50 (who could be Amos's mother if she had more than one forename and is using the other here, or his father's second wife if amos's mother died, as there are numerous Jane Johnson's who died at Durham between 1894 and 1900, and that would explain why there are only 2 sons and the youngest is 18 when Margaret is just 50, and so would have had her last child at 32, before the end of childbearing years, if she were the mother of both children), at Kilhope, Weardale, Stanhope, Durham, England. Also in the household are Emerson Johnson, 48, Single, Lead Miner, and Thomas's brother, and Wilfred Johnson, 18, Single, Working on the Farm, Amos's brother and Thomas's son.
