Biography

Frances was born in England about 1610.

Some unsourced online trees have said she was the daughter of Philip Randall (1574 – 1662) and Joane Flush (1578 – 1665). No credible sources have been found. IF Philip Randall had such a daughter, she was not THIS one. See TAG 25:151 and Research Notes for further details.

Marriages

Frances married first about 1630 ____ Clark (NOT Joseph Clark of Windsor) by whom she had:

  1. Mary Clark b about 1630, married George Strong[1]

She married second Thomas Dewey 22 March 1638/39 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut by whom she had:

  1. Thomas Dewey 1640 – 1690[2]
  2. Josiah Dewey Sr. 1641 – 1732[3]
  3. Anna Dewey 1643 – 1701[4]
  4. Israel Dewey 1645 – 1678[5]
  5. Jedediah Dewey 1647 – 1718[6]

She married, third, in November 1648 George Phelps (1606 – 1687) by whom she had three children. [7][8]

  1. Jacob[9]
  2. John[10]
  3. Nathaniel[11]

Research Notes

Disputed Parents: The confusion with her parentage comes from a conflation of George Phelps' first wife, a daughter of Phillip Randall, Philura Randall, and his second wife, Francis, the widow of Thomas Dewey. This is usually seen in Family Trees that have unreliable sources by WikiTree standards. They were two different people.[12]

No known daughter Abigail Dewey: Abigail (Dewey) Cutler (abt.1646- abt.1711) was previously attached as a daughter. The probate record specifically names Thomas Dewey's children, and does not include Abigail. See Abigail's profile and PGM: Proposal to sever attached daughter Abigail from Thomas Dewey (-1639), Windsor, CT for further discussion.

Disputed son John: There is a record for the death of a John Dewey in Windsor, 23 June 1640, "drouned in ye r:et."[13] This has sometimes been interpreted to be an infant child of Thomas, but given the circumstances of the death by drowning, seems more likely to be an adult or at least a toddler. With their marriage in 1639, and birth of son Thomas in February 1640, John Dewey was probably not their son and is not mentioned in Anderson's sketch.[14]

John Dewey needs to be detached as a son. There is no credible evidence he was a son of Thomas and Francis. Thank you.

Thank you, Monica. I've added a comment on John's profile asking for input. I agree he probably should be disconnected.

Thank you, Bobbie. It seems like this has been disputed for a while now.
John has been removed as unsupported.

TAG 25:151. is an error. It says nothing about this family. The correct TAG is probably the one mentioned below as there is no other TAG about Phillura.

See TAG 17:176 about Philip Randall and family. He was an early settler in Dorchester MA and moved to Windsor where he died 2 May 1662 and left a will. it mentions his wife but did not give her a name. She died on 24 Aug 1665, age 87, b. ca 1578. Only three children mentioned in New England records. It also mentions three known children born in Windsor (order uncertain): Abraham, d. 21 Aug 1690 Windsor, CT, was a member of Dorchester church before moving to Windsor, married 2x, no children; Philura who married George Phelps in about 1637, had issue; Philip, buried 26 Sep 1648 Windsor, prob. unmarried. Phillip Randoll's marriage record was found - Phillippe Randole & Joan Fush, 10 Apr 1608, Allington, Dorset, Eng, Allington Parish, (Phillimore's Dorset Parish Registers, Marriages, Vol 2, pg 94) . Joan Fush was probably about 30 when she married and the children mentioned above were probably born after 1608. Written by Charles Almon Torrey. Anyone can see this record in AmericanAncestors.org. Randall-2867 and Unknown-256580 appear to represent the same person because: Frances Unknown wife of Clark, Dewey, Phelps
posted by Anne B
This profile has become a conglomeration of two persons (see the current bio), Francis ----- and Philura Randall. Both Francis and Philura already have profiles. Since this one has no children attached she could go either way. She's got Philura's parents attached, but has an extra husband and Francis' death date. Managers do you have a preference which profile she merges into Randall-306 or Unknown-256580
posted on Randall-2867 (merged) by Anne B
Randall-2867 is very similar to this profile. Much of the information above that is disproven is on that profile, such as the parents and being married to Joseph Clark of Windsor, CT. That profile is also married to the same George Phelps as this profile, the dates are the same, so it could easily be proposed as a duplicate, but I suspect that George should be removed from the Randall-2867 profile, as well as adding Research Notes about the conflicting or inaccurate information, so that a merge will not be proposed.

Thank you for your assistance.

Thanks Linda, I'm working on detangling.

Randall-2867 and Randall-3490 appear to represent the same person because: The profile for Randall-3490 states that Frances is a daughter of Philip Randall
posted on Randall-3490 (merged) by Miguel Kelley
Randall-1113 and Unknown-256580 appear to represent the same person because: Frances Randall was not born in 1613 in Windsor, CT because it wasn't founded until the 1630s. Unreliable source. Frances is Unknown surname.
From Donald Lines Jacobus, "Strong-Clark The Corrector Corrected," in TAG 35:151: "There was also in Windsor a widow, Frances Clark, name of husband unknown, who married 22 Mar 1638/9 Thomas Dewey, and the records of Dewey's estate show that she had one Clark child, also named Mary, who was 12 in 1648, hence born about 1636 and a little older than Joseph Clarke's daughter [of same name bp 30 Sep 1638]. It was this Mary Clark [dau of widow Frances Clark] who married, 26 Nov. 1656, John Strong, Jr., as his first wife. This is proved by two deeds recorded 21 Sept. 1663 in which John Strong called two sons of Thomas and Frances Dewey his 'brothers.' "
