George was born 22 September 1865, in Owen County,Kentucky to Andrew Jackson Traylor and Ediah Barber.[1] This exact date is uncertain, a document supporting the date remains unfound. Perhaps is can be accredited to a family Bible owned by one of the descendents who has put a tree onto Ancestry.
In 1870, George was 6.[2] The Traylor family was living in the Harmony Precinct of Southern Owen County. Mr. Daniel English was the Census worker in 1870. He visited with the family on the 18th day of August that year. The Traylor family consisted of 10 souls that summer. There were Mr. Jackson Traylor or Trailor, who was 35 years of age, his wife, Elizabeth, a lady who was 34 years old. Their children were as follows: Nathaniel-16, Andrew J.- 14, Mary F. - 12, Louisa - 10, Nancy D. - 8, George W. - 5, Sarah E. - 3 and little Annie who was 5 months. Mr. Traylor has personal property of $200.00, he was working as a laborer for area farmers. Young George has not started to school yet.
W. H. Redding was working as the U. S. Census enumerator in 1880. He gathered the data from the Traylor family on June 3rd, that year. The family now numbers 11 people. Nathaniel and Andrew have moved on into adulthood, but three more little people have joined the family. There is 7-year-old Rosa Lee, 4-year-old Rilla T. and the toddler, Robert A, who is 1. George is now 14 and working on the farm when he isn't attending school. More likely than not he's attending school when he isn't working on the farm. [3]
George married Alice Gardner on March 25, 1886, in Owen County, Kentucky.[4][5] Mr. R. H. Alexander was the officiant, and the witnesses were W G Reville and Ed Howard. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 5 daughters.
In 1900, George had brought his family to the New Columbus portion of Owen County, Kentucky. This precinct is in the southeastern section of the county, near the Grant and Scott County lines. [6] George and Alice have been married 15 years and she has borne 7 children to George, but only 5 remain living. We learn on this document that George was in fact born in September of 1865, we still don't know the exact date. This report completed by Mr. Oscar Jones, on June 13th tells us George can read and write. He is renting the farm he is making his living on.
George realized the Great American dream at some point after 1900, he became a landowner. On that farm is where Charles A Claxon interviewed George or Alice for the 1910 Census on May the 11th. The family was living on the Bethany and Teresita Turnpike, today the road is known as Teresita. Alice and George have now brought 10 children into the world and 8 are alive, 6 of the 8 reside with them on that farm. The oldest is Earl or Earlie as it is written here. The baby of the family is Carrie B who is only 2. On this document, Mr. Claxon tells us that George can't read or write. [7]
His son Vernon ends up in Indiana with his brother Nathan by 1920. George has bought a farm on Harmony Pike, which is the last road in Owen County before you reach the Scott County line on US Hwy 227. Harmony runs from US Hwy 227 to KY Hwy 368, commonly known as Cedar Creek Rd. It is very near Franklin County where it intersects Cedar Creek Rd. There are 4 of his children living with him and Alice when the Census is performed by Hubert Hearn on January 20th of 1920. His daughter, Floyd and her husband, Neal are living with them at the time. [8]
It appears that George had moved his family and farming operation back closer to Beechwood by the time the 1930 Census rolled around. He, Alice, their baby girl, Carrie and her husband, Joe Warfield were living on Georgetown Road or US Hwy 227 on April 17th when W. W. Oliver gathered the data for the Census Bureau in that section of Owen County Kentucky.[9] For some reason, Mr. Oliver doesn't record the value of George's farm for us. George is now 64 years old.
This decade brought Mr. and Mrs. Traylor to being alone again. They were living in the Beechwood community of southern Owen County, Kentucky on April 16th, 1940, when Rex Jones gathered the census data. George had completed the 3rd grade and Alice the 5th grade. The farm they owned had a value of $400.00. I am unable to find the 1940 Census in FamilySearch.org
