Biography

Joseph was born on 28 August 1830, and was baptized the same day in Saint-Michel-d'Yamaska. He was the son of Theophile Teroux and Julie Bernier. His godparents were Joseph Bernier and Catherine Labé.[1]

In the 1870 US census Joseph was in Warwick, Kent, Rhode Island.[2][3]

Joseph's card in the US Naturalization Petitions states that he was born in Canada 26 November 1830, he entered the United States in November 1876 at St. Albans, VT, and was naturalized as a citizen of the US at the US Circuit Court at Providence on 8 December 1888.[4][5]

Newspaper Gleanings

  • April 1881 - "The increase of drunkenness on Sundays of late led Chief of Police Rice to suspect that certain dispensers of the ardent were violating their licenses, and accordingly on Sunday last he made a tour of inspection and found his suspicions verified. The result was .... the last two were discharge, but the other paid five dollars and costs each for violating the law. On Tuesday Joseph Theroux of 117 Harrison street, for the same offence, was fined in like manner."[13]
  • May 1881 - Joseph Goyette requested that his license No. 117 Harrison be transferred to Joseph Theroux It was transferred later the same month.[14]
  • Summer 1883 - Joseph's petitioned for a license to keep a victualling house was received and transferred to the Committee on Police. The committee reported unfavorably and Joseph was given leave to withdraw his petition.[15][16]
  • Nov. 1883 - "Officers Haberlin and Parker yesterday noon searched the place kept ... by Joseph Theroux, on Harrison street, and found and brought away two barrels of ale. The suspected owners of aforesaid contraband goods have been notified to appear..."[17]
  • Aug 1888 - Joseph entered his horse Wonder into the Oat Race at Pawtucket Driving Park. The race was for local horses with the purse being thirty bushels of oats.[18]

In August 1889 the Probate Court approved the bond of Joseph Theroux as guardian of his minor children.[19][20]

Death Joseph died on 7 October 1891 in Pawtucket, Providence, Rhode Island, United States.[21]

Died from Injuries Received "Joseph Theroux, who was injured by falling through a trap in the floor of the store of N. C. Jenks last Saturday, died at his residence, No. 962 Main street, late Wednesday evening of injuries received."[22]

"The funeral of Joseph Theroux, who was fatally injured by falling down cellar in Central Falls last week, took place on Sunday at his late residence, 962 Main street. He was a member of the St. Jean Baptiste Union and of the Lafayette Guards, and the two organizations attended the funeral in a body. The remains were buried at Mr. St, Mary's Cemetery. The bearers were the four sons of the deceased. The service at St. John's Church was attended by hundreds, and many were unable to gain admission. It was by far the largest funeral that ever took place among the French people in this city. There were 43 carriages in the procession." [23]
