Biography

Caroline was born in May 1881 according to the 1900 census. She was in Chester, Delaware, Pennsylvania with her parents and one older sister.^[1]

Caroline R. married James H. Hughes on 26 August 1905 in Delaware, Pennsylvania, United States. She was born on 29 May 1881 in Chester, Pa. and he on 14 Jan 1867 in Delaware.^{[2] [3]} They moved to Delaware and had two daughters by 1910^[4] and completed the family with a son born about 1918.^[5]

All five were still together in 1930. Daughter Caroline was manager of a weekly newspaper.^[6] By 1940 only son James was still there, joined by his wife Josephine. ^[7] In 1950 James III was still with his parents, but divorced. Father and son were both lawyers.^[8]

Caroline, daughter of Henry Taylor & Adalaide Upham (transcribed Tepham online), died (age 78) in 1959 in United States. The informant was James H. Hughes III.^{[9] [10]} Her husband, U. S. Senator James H. Hughes died before her. The children survived, listed as Mrs. W. Oakman Hay, Jr., Mrs. Caroline Hughes Martin, and James H. Hughes III. Other family and four grandchildren were also named.^[11]
