Research Notes

In 1860, living in John's household was 25-year-old James Taylor, born in Ohio. If this is his brother, then it's probable that John immigrated between 1828 and 1835.

Three possible matches found for John in 1850 census living in Ohio - two have family trees linked to the record on FamilySearch, and appear to have remained in the area where they were in 1850, the third household is in Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio and contains a 15-year-old James Taylor among others, who might perhaps be the same James as in the 1860 census. However the rest of the household although all Taylors were all born in Ohio right up to the eldest, 40-year-old George. There's also a Jonathan Taylor born in England next door. This 1850 John was a foundryman; Jonathan was a farmer, George a moulder. Dayton is 58km from Greenville.

From "History of Darke County, Ohio, from its earliest settlement to the present ...," by Frazer Ells Wilson, Hobart Publishing Company, p. 76

... John B. Taylor ... was a native of Lancashire, England. [They] became early settlers of Greenville, where Mr. Taylor became prominent in business and industrial circles, being the owner of the car shops of Taylor & Brother, which for many years was a well-known manufacturing concern here. However, he suffered a paralytic stroke, from the effects of which he died a few years later. His wife, who survived him, is also deceased. In their religious faith they were Episcopalians and were folk of sterling character and strictest integrity of word and action. They were the parents of nine children, namely: ...

From "Reports of cases argued and determined in the Supreme Court of Ohio, Volume 16," by Ohio. Supreme Court, Ohio. Supreme Court, p. 510-511,

Glidden, Murphin & Co. et al v. John B. Taylor et al.
...
John B. Taylor and Samuel D. Taylor, under the firm name of Taylor & Brother, carried on business as machinists in a certain foundry and machine-shop, hereinafter referred to, in the village of Greenville, in Darke county, previous and up to about the year 1854, when the firm became insolvent in consequence of one of its principal debtors---the Greenville and Miami Railroad Company---failing to make payment.

"Ohio, Soldier Grave Registration," (Ancestry), lists John B. Taylor, b. Feb. 2, 1828 in England, d. in Greenville, OH on Dec 26 1881. Probably the same person.

Three different possible birthplaces for John more specific than England are given in death records of his children: Chestershire England in the death record of Gertrude Taylor Simison in 1946, Lancashire England in the death record of Sadie Taylor in 1937, and Taunton England in the death record of George Farrar Taylor in 1937. While by far the best-known Taunton in England is the one in Somerset, there is also a Taunton in Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire, so two of these descriptions are entirely compatible, and while Taunton was in Lancashire in the 1800s, Dukinfield just a couple of kilometres away was in Cheshire. There was a John Taylor christened on 30 Mar 1828 at St Michael's Church in Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire, son of Jonathan Taylor (weaver of Taunton) and Sarah who could well be him (listed on Lancashire Online Parish Clerk) - middle names were somewhat unusual in working class families at the time aside from a few very common combinations like Mary Ann, so he could have chosen himself a middle name later, and it's also very compatible with the suggested birth date of 2 Feb 1828.
