Clive Lyoff Taylor Amadio AM was one of the famous musical Amadio brothers: Harry Amadio was a French horn player; Leon Amadio was a trumpeter; and Neville Amadio AM MBE became a well-known Australian orchestral principal flautist. Clive played flute, oboe, clarinet and saxophone, establishing a reputation as one of Australia’s most accomplished clarinettists and its finest saxophonist.
Born Clive Lyoff Taylor on 28th February 1904 at Redfern, New South Wales, Australia, he was the second of the four accomplished musical sons of Harry Henville Taylor Amadio and Florence Beer.[1] However, it was by Amadio that he was known professionally and married under on three occasions.
Employed by the State Conservatorium of Music (1942-45), Clive taught the saxophone. He founded the Clive Amadio Quintet, and presented a Sunday evening radio program on the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) The Clive Amadio Half Hour for over ten years until 1958. He played for Queen Elizabeth II at a Royal Banquet in 1954 during her first Australian tour, following which he commenced a European tour (in 1954-55) with his regular pianist, Olga Krasnik.
When the ABC did not renew Clive's contract in 1958, he and Olga bought the newsagency in Oxford Street, Woollahra, that they ran thirteen years. In August 1972 they retired to Nelson Bay, where they joined the part-time staff of the State Conservatorium of Music, Newcastle branch; teaching and performing from 1973 until 1980.
Clive was appointed Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1980 - the first award in the new Australian Honours System. He was also awarded honorary life membership of the Clarinet Society of New South Wales in 1980, the first time this award had been made to an Australian. Clive's son, Len Amadio, was also a noted Australian flautist. Len was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for services to Australian music the year after Clive received his appointment.
Clive married Gwendoline Morgan on 25th August 1928 at Rose Bay, New South Wales.[2] They separated the following year and divorced.
He married Laurie Walley in Sydney on 2nd October 1935.[3] They separated before 1954.
After they both obtained divorces from their previous respective partners, Clive and Olga married on 28th July 1967 in the registrar-general's office, Sydney.[4]
Clive Amadio AM passed away in 1983 at Randwick, New South Wales.[5]
