Biography
Albert was the son of Matilda Taylor. He was christened on 17 November 1870 at Corsley, Wiltshire, England.[1][2] Albert's mother, Matilda, was unmarried at the time of his christening.[3]
The 1871 England and Wales Census lists Albert E. as an infant boy living in the home of his maternal grandparents with his mother, two aunts, and two uncles at Corsley, Wiltshire, England.[4]
It appears that Thomas Sparey adopted young Albert after marrying his mother, Matilda, in March 1872.
The 1881 England and Wales Census lists Albert as a ten year old boy living with his mother, step-father, three younger brothers, and a younger sister at Corsley, Wiltshire, England.[5]
At the age of 18 Albert served in the Special Reserve (3rd) Battalion Wiltshire Regiment. It is interesting to note that Albert's birth year is noted to be 1872, the year that his mother married his step-father, Thomas.[6]
