Lily Bird Talbott was born in Kincheloe, West Virginia on May 28, 1892 to Newton Talbott and Luella Coffindaffer. She was the fourth of seven children born to the couple.
Lily was initially raised on a farm in the Union District of Harrison County, West Virginia. In July 1906, the family moved to a farm located in the Leland Precinct of Nez Perce County, Idaho. By 1912, the family was living in Juliaetta, Idaho. Lily assisted her father in his duties as postmaster for the town.
In 1918, Lily was living on her brother's farm in Carter, Montana. On September 7, 1918, Lily married Edwin Mathieson in Great Falls, Montana. Her eldest brother Earl and his wife Vieva were their witnesses. The couple settled in Great Falls, Montana.
Shortly after their marriage, Edwin was drafted into military service. He was stationed at Jefferson Barracks in Montana. On December 9, 1918 he was informed that Lily was having medical issues and was permitted to return to Great Falls in order to be with his wife.
It was determined that Lily was having appendicitis and an operation was performed in a Great Falls, Montana hospital on February 14, 1919. She died as a result of the operation on February 18, 1919. Her father received the news of her death en route from his home in Juliaetta, Idaho to Great Falls, Montana.
Lily was 26 years old at the time of her death. She is buried in Juliaetta Cemetery in Juliaetta, Idaho.
