Hi, I am entering probates for Barnstable County, Massachusetts in colonial times. I was wondering if someone could create a category for Barnstable County, Massachusetts, Slaveholders. Is this something I can do myself or do I need to ask to have someone do it? Thanks.

Hi Karen,

Thanks for asking. You can request it on G2G. You should request 2 categories: "Barnstable County, Massachusetts, Slave Owners" and "Barnstable County, Massachusetts, Slaves" You can tag black_heritage. Thanks.

Noting here for anyone who sees the question that the categories have been created. Thanks for working on this, Karen!
Not sure if you want this info- Black Loyalist Refugees, 1782-1807- Port Roseway Associates, searchable database, even use just 1 letter to search, will bring up lots of names, clicking on the left column number brings up the images of the original records. they are very blurry, but zoomable. https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/loyalists/loyalist-port-roseway/Pages/port-roseway-associates-loyalists.aspx#c

Hi Emma,

I just came across a large amount of data. Where can I upload it because emailing it is not practical. I have broken most of it up by states. Judy

Hi,

I’ve been going through family records. They’re mostly in South Carolina. What’s the best way for me to get involved in this project as I want to make sire I’m documenting things correctly as I come across them?

I ask because they’re not 100% in SC so I don’t want to join the SC team and then step on another team’s toes by adding things out of stage.

Hi Rebecca, I'll be happy to help you get started. I'll send you a private message.

Hi I am very new to the projects side of this I've only ever worked on my tree and I filled out one form already but I'm finding myself completely lost at how to even begin this. As well and looking in your locations groups or projects I'm curious, most of my family is from the state of Mississippi and my side of the family was absolutely plantation owners and in slavers I found so many documents of wills and such that list people's names as they were bequeathed to their descendants. I've even done one document where my ancestors unfortunately were involved in passing a law through the supreme Court that allowed enslaved peoples to be held in escrow for the descendants of the deceased. I'm just at a loss reading these things and I'm curious if there is a way to add in like these people of Mississippi.

Hi Jeff, discovering this information is always a jar to one's system. Suddenly it is there in handwritten documents. I am linking our Welcome Mat here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:US_Black_Heritage:_Welcome_Mat#Step_.231_Very_Important_Project_Pages

It would be great if you went through our Path program where we teach you how to document the information. We don't yet have a Mississippi team as we need more people committed to that state. Feel free to PM me if you have other questions.

We are actually setting up a Mississippi Team right now and should have it up and running soon. Emma
I am beginning to add files on enslaved individuals in Cambridge, Ma. and can't figure out how to "tag" either these individuals or their owners in the wikitree file itself. One example is Darby Vassall and his family. I see no place to add an "enslaved" tag to his file or own to his owner's file that would alert others that he is part of the Black History or Enslaved History tagging.
Hi Suzanne, we have a help page that walks you through all the steps for adding enslaved ancestors and slave owner profiles here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:US_Black_Heritage:_Heritage_Exchange_Portal

You can also add the Heritage Exchange category to every profile and we will make sure they are set up according to standards. That is--Category: Heritage Exchange--inside double brackets. Thanks! Emma
