In his will, Joseph Smith left “the quarter section of land I have been living on” to his youngest sons, Samuel H and John B Smith. This 80 acres land grant is likely part of what is mentioned in his will.[3]. In 1828, the boys sold this land to John Yates, likely a brother or father of Martha.[4]
In 1829, the heirs of Joseph Smith gave power of attorney to their brother-in-law, James C Fox, to sell a couple of properties that Joseph still owned in Kentucky at the time of his death.[5][6] They sold property in Bath, KY to William Atchison[7] and in Campbell, KY to James Taylor, who had been associated with Joseph Smith in the late 1790s in Campbell, KY.[8]
On 4 Jun 1929, John B Y Smith married Sally (or Sarah) Yates.[9] There were two John B Smiths in the area about the same age. He may have added the "Y" to distinguish between himself and the other John B Smith.
Between 1835-1836, John and his wife sold three properties in Monroe County, MO. [10][11][12]
In the 1850 census, John (age 40), Farmer, was in District 59, Monroe, Missouri, United States.[13]
