Samuel H Smith was born 30 Jun 1805 in Montgomery, KY (now Bath, KY).[1]
As a teenager, he likely arrived in Ralls, MO (later Monroe, MO) with his father, Joseph Smith and his siblings, between 1820-1821. The [2]. “. . .no permanent settlement was made within the boundaries of Monroe county until 1820 . . . a settlement was commenced between the Middle and North forks of Salt River between Paris and Florida, by Joseph Smith, Sr., Alexander W Smith, Joseph Smith, Jr., Samuel H Smith and others. This was designated by the early settlers as the “Smith settlement.”
Samuel married two times. The first time he married Martha Patsey Yates on 11 Sep 1828 in Ralls, MO. [3]
Samuel and Martha had at least 11 children born between about 1831 and 1854. [4][5]
After his first wife passed, he married Nancy Yates Adams on 11 Jul 1867 in Monroe, MO.[6] They did not have any children together.
In his will, Joseph Smith left “the quarter section of land I have been living on” to his youngest sons, Samuel H and John B Smith. This 80 acres land grant is likely part of what is mentioned in his will.[7]. In 1828, the boys sold this land to John Yates, likely a brother or father of Martha.[8]
In 1829, the heirs of Joseph Smith gave power of attorney to their brother-in-law, James C Fox, to sell a couple of properties that Joseph still owned in Kentucky at the time of his death.[9][10] They sold property in Bath, KY to William Atchison[11] and in Campbell, KY to James Taylor, who had been associated with Joseph Smith in the late 1790s in Campbell, KY.[12]
Samuel seemed to learn from his father regarding obtaining land grants because he received six land grants between 1829 and 1839 in Monroe, MO. [13][14][15][16][17][18]
In 1844, Samuel bought land from his future second wife and her first husband, Nancy and Ovid Adams.[19]
Between 1832 and 1858, Samuel and Martha sold five properties. [20][21][22][23] In 1836, Samuel was given the power of attorney for Nathan Kennedy of Bourbon, KY. It’s unclear what their relationship was to each other.[24]
