Biography

Richard Sherburne, Esq. was the son of Richard Sherburne and Agnes Harrington.[1][2][3] His date and place of birth are unknown and are estimated.

Marriage and Children

He married Alice Hamerton, daughter of Laurence Hamerton, Esq. and Isabel Tempest,[1] about 1425, pursuant to a 1422 agreement for his marriage to 'Maud', daughter of Lawrence Hamerton.[4] Alice was either known as Maud, or Richard was initially contracted to a sister named Maud, but in any event married Alice.

Richard and Alice had one son and two daughters:

  • Robert,[5] born about 1435, died 29 August 1492, married Joan Radcliffe and had five children[1]
  • Isabel, wife of John Towneley and had six children[1]
  • Agnes, wife of Henry Rishton of Dunkenhalgh[1]

Death

Richard Sherburne, Esq. left a will dated 3 January 1436,[1] and died only a few days before his father Richard Sherburne, the elder.[4] He was buried on 25 May 1441 at Mitton, Lancashire, England.[1][2][6]

Research Notes

Other Suggested Children

Elizabeth

An earlier version of this profile mentioned one other daughter, Elizabeth, wife of someone with the surname Clitheroe. No source was given, and she is not listed in Douglas Richardson's works. She is mentioned in Charles Davies Sherborn's A History of the Family Sherborn (1901), but as a sibling of Richard who received bequests in her mother's Will.[3]

Wife of someone with the last name Charnock

Charles Davies Sherborn, in his book on the Sherborn family, lists another daughter, first name unknown, whose husband had the surname Charnock. The source he gives is Stowe MS 711, which contains a Sherburne pedigree dating from 1693[7] and, as the book recognises, this pedigree gives an unreliable account of Richard's family.[3]

The Charnock Richard section of the Victoria County History of Lancashire states in footnotes that Robert Charnock had a wife called Margery, but gives no family origins or last name for her. Her first name is given in 1491 and 1498 land transactions and she is said to have married a Henry Banastre after Robert's death.[8] On the evidence found so far, Margery could well have been born some years after Richard Sherburne's death in 1441. (See Margery's profile for discussion of her birth date.)

Chetham Society editions of the 1567 and 1613 Visitations of Lancashire state that Robert Charnock married an unnamed daughter of an unnamed Sherborne of Stonyhurst, Lancashire. There is nothing in them to say that she was daughter of Richard.[9][10]

Hello Thomas

The profile page of Richard (Sherburne-7) Esquire shows he had 8 siblings.

Profile pages of , Isabel (Sherburne-481) shows she had eight siblings, and (Isabel Sherburne-548) shows only 2 siblings, Robert (Sherburne-29) and Agnes (Sherburne-11) Rishton. Agnes is not listed as a sibling on Richard (Sherburne-7) or Isabel (Sherburne-418) profile page.

Isabel (Sherburne-548) and Isabel (Sherburne-481) appear to be the same person, and may need to be merged.

Thank you!

also in MCA... Elizabeth (Harington) Stanley & Agnes (Harington) Sherburne were sisters, so I doubt that Agnes Harington and Agnes Stanley are the same person.
