Biography

Mary came to Western Australia with her parents on the Will Watch, arriving on 24 February 1852.[1]

She married George Tomkinson in 1857 in Perth.[2]

George died in 1884 and Mary subsequently married James Henry in Fremantle in 1888.[3]

By the death of Mrs. Mary Ann Henry, which occurred at the residence of her son, Mr. E. H. Tomkinson, Coniston, John-street, North Fremantle, on the 14th inst., there has been removed a very old resident of this State. The deceased lady, who was in her seventy-ninth year, was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. John Rhodes, of Greenough Flats. She was born in Kill-gate, Yorkshire, and arrived in this State in 1851 in the sailing ship Willwatch. She had thus lived in Western Australia for 63 years, 26 years of which were spent in Perth, and the last 37 years in North Fre-mantle, where she was well known and highly respected. She was married twice, the first time to the late Mr. George Tom-kinson, late of North Fremantle, and after-wards to Mr. James Henry. She leaves three sons and one daughter - Messrs. W. G. Tomkinson (Bunbury), E. H. Tomkin-son, and W. J. Tomkinson (North Freman-tle), and Mrs. A. T. Bunsell (Boulder).
The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon last, the cortege proceeding from North Fremantle to the Methodist Cemetery at Karrakatta, where the remains were interred. The Rev. F. S. Finch, who road a portion of the burial service at Coniston, officiated at the graveside in the presence of a large gathering of relatives and friends, including many old identities of the State. The chief mourners were Messrs. W. G., E. H., and W. J. Tomkin-non (sons), Mrs. A. T. Bunsell (daughter), Mrs. Sarah Moore, and Hrs. Hannah Pat-terson (sisters), Mrs. E. H. Tomkinson (daughter-in-law), Mr. A. T. Bunsell (son-in-law), and Messrs. William, Thomas, and Harry Moore, Mrs. T. Moore, Mr. and Mrs. G. Costello, Mr. and Mrs. J. Sadler, and Messrs. Walter and Charles Costello (cousins), and the Misses Hickman and Lee.[4]
