South African Roots Project Template

This template, {{South African Roots}}, is only for the (sourced and improved !) people and profiles with South African Roots that are part of the South African Roots Project and needs Project Profile Protection

For younger profiles, your own and your direct, close family members it is fine to add the sticker template, even if there is no birth record or other source added yet.

This is how you can add the sticker: just copy and paste, immediately under the heading Biography, on the profiles you manage, {{South African Roots Sticker}} The sticker will then form part of the Biography and are always align to the right.

However, for all older profiles, it should only be added if they are sourced and improved and not already have a template or are perhaps falling under a different project. If there are more projects the profile could fall under, always first ask in G2G, the template from the most proper project is going to be added.

To add this template to an improved and sourced profile that fall under the Profile protection criteria, listed below. contact one of the South African leaders

• One: They must fit within a project
• Two: They must be 200 or notable
• Three: They must have the lowest-numbered ID
• Four: They must be controversial or duplicated.

What are Templates and Categories?

Categories just creates lists of profiles which are grouped together for a purpose.

Templates are just a nifty way of displaying the contents of one web page on another page. We make them small so that they will display for instance only a Project box and we add the category to the template page which then automatically displays the category on the profile page as well.

South African Roots Needs (Maintenance) Template System

The South African Roots Project is using a Needs (Maintenance) system, we are using categories mostly.

By changing just the last word(s) in the category, if the profile 'needs' something else, it can be moved to the next step in the process or a different needs category. And if a profile has more then one needs, and is project managed or PPP't you can add three needs with one template, it should (for example) look like this:
[[South African Roots|needs=Birth Record|needs1=PPP|needs2=Death Notice]] of course all kinds of variations are possible, depending on the needs.

Below you will find all needs categories with a little explaining:

1. When a profile has no sources, but when it is clear it is a South African Roots profile

2. When you have found a record for Birth/Baptism and the LNAB has to be corrected all you have to do is change the words Birth Record in the template into LNAB

3. When the LNAB is correct(ed) all you now have to do is change the 'word' LNAB in this template into PPP.
►You can add (or copy and paste this one) to the top of the Bio: : [[Category:South African Roots Project Needs PPP]] it adds them all here : South African Roots Project Needs PPP All profiles in this category will be PPP't by the projectleaders, if something else needs to be done , so when the PPP needs to be removed to correct a LNAB for example, just add a clear post to the profile where this is explained . So with this template you don't have to email links anymore, just adding the template is all you have to do and the profiles will get PPP't.

South African Roots Needs (Maintenance) + other Categories

2. For all profiles of People who were born (parents Unknown) and or migrated to South Africa and had descendants, only for profiles falling under the South African Roots Project, so people born after 1806 !

Old definition Where the profile is without reference to at least a reasonably acceptable secondary source. This is now enough to create a profile, but the profile is still unsourced according to the next definition.

New definition:According to the Source-a-Thon definition of Unsourced. A profile is Unsourced when it does not have a primary source as reference. Valid sources include census records, BMD records/index references, military documents, land documents, wills, etc. A source cannot be another family tree, such as Geni or an Ancestry Member Tree.

Example A profile sourced with only a user submitted tree from a another website has a source. It is just not a credible source and since we cannot do genealogy without credible sources, the profile is considered unsourced.
