Biography

Mary Ann Pethen was born in 1816 in Okeford Fitzpaine [1] to Robert Pethen a shoemaker and Priscilla Finder. In 1838 she married Charles Adams at Iwerne Minster [2] (recorded as a cheese monger on the marriage certificate but soon to follow in the family business of publican) and together they had 11 children. By 1841 Mary and and Charles were living on Glue Hill in Sturminster Newton [3] [4] where Charles was a publican probably at the Jolly Brewer. By 1861 they had move to Okeford Fitzpaine where Charles was the publican of the Traveller's rest [5] and by 1871 they had moved again to Child Okeford where Charles was publican of the Union Arms [6]. Charles died in 1877 and in 1881 Mary Ann was still living in Child Okeford with her daughter Elizabeth and was now recorded as the publican of the Union Arms [7]. She died in 1889 in Childe Okeford [8].
