Otto Ernest Nothling was born in August 1900, the sixth child of Carl Martin Nothling, a mason from Prussia, and his Queensland-born wife Marie Wilhelmine, née Tesch. He was born in what was then known as Teutoberg (also spelled Teutoburg) in Queensland, it had its named changed to Witta during World War I.
Dr. Otto Ernest Nothling was a rugby union player who represented Australia, as well as an Australian cricketer who played one Test against the touring English side at Sydney from December 14 - 20, 1928. He is one of only two Australian rugby and cricket dual internationals, the other being Johnny Taylor. Nothling is recorded as Australian Rugby Test cap number 170. And Australian Cricket Test cap number 127.
He studied medicine at the University of Sydney as there were no Medical Schools in Queensland, receiving his M.B., Ch.M., in 1926. It was while he was initially studying in Sydney that he commenced his representative career in both Rugby and Cricket. After graduating as a doctor, Nothling briefly practiced medicine in Dubbo in western New South Wales. Before he returned to Queensland and he set up a medical practice in Maryborough, in 1930. In 1929 he had retired from major representative sport, although he continued to play cricket locally.
Otto Ernest Nothling married Mildred Melville Horsburgh on the 1st of June 1932 at St. Paul's Church of England, Maryborough in Queensland, Australia
Dr Nothling was also elected as an Alderman on the Maryborough City Council from 1933-40.
During World War II, Dr. Nothling served as a medical officer with the rank of Major in the Australian Army Medical Corps. Serving in both Egypt and Greece from 1940 until 1943, when he was invalided out and returned to his practice at Maryborough.
He studied for and gained a diploma in Dermatological Medicine in 1949, again at the University of Sydney. With this Dr. Nothling was able to set up as a specialist in Wickham Terrace in Brisbane. Then he became the first skin specialist appointed to the Brisbane Children's Hospital. As well as a council-member of the Dermatological Association of Australia.
He passed away in September 1965 at Chelmer, a suburb of Brisbane in Queensland. And he is buried in the Mount Thompson Memorial Gardens and Crematorium in Holland Park West, in Queensland, Australia.
