Biography

Gregory was born in Micklefield, Yorkshire in 1881. He was the son of William Meakin and Sarah Moakes. The family returned to their native East Midlands and settled near Nottingham. Gregory was educated at The Peoples College, Nottingham and found employment as a solicitor's clerk at the firm of Beaumont and Goodhall, In 1903 he married Mabel Burton in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, they had a daughter, Evelyn, in Beeston, Nottingham in 1906. By 1917 Gregory became secretary to Nottingham Chamber of Commerce. He became a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and held a number of important posts as Secretary to Employment Federations in the Hosiery, clothing and lace-making industries. On the 20 February 1930 he sailed to South America as part of a trade delegation accompanying a cricket tour organised by Sir Julien Cahn. a Nottingham businessman and cricket enthusiast. Following a successful tour Gregory fell ill with dysentery aboard the SS Avila Star after leaving Buenos Aires. By the time he arrived in Plymouth he was seriously ill but remained on the ship until it reached Tilbury and was then transported to London Hospital for Tropical diseases, unfortunately he passed away on 23 May 1930.
