According to a family record found in "a very old book with heavy, leather covers, showing great age," in which it was written that it "belonged to Jonathan Lockwood in 1687," Timothy Lockwood, son of David Lockwood of Greenwich, Connecticut, was born on 26 October 1735, and married a woman named Abigail.[1]

By this we identify him as the Timothy Lockwood who was married to Abigail Mead, daughter of Jacob and Sarah Mead, also of Greenwich.

Timothy Lockwood was named as a son by Capt. David Lockwood Sr., in his will dated 9 December 1755.[2]

Timothy Lockwood and Joseph Mead were made co-executors of Jacob Mead's estate on 24 March 1762, when his mother-in-law, the original executrix, died,[3] and Abigail, wife of Timothy Lockwood, was among the distributees of the estate on 7 September 1762.[4]

By his gravestone, we know Timothy was a Captain in the Connecticut State Troops, and thus it was likely he who was Captain in the Town Guards or Coast Guards in Greenwich, under whom Enos Lockwood was serving during the Revolutionary War,[5] as Enos testified in 1832.[6]

NGS Quarterly, Vol. 102, No. 4, December 2014, has an article by Frederick C. Hart Jr., that identifies this Timothy Lockwood as the father of Stephen Lockwood who married Abigail Marshall. It says, among other things:

Timothy Lockwood... married Abigail Mead before September 1762 and died in Greenwich [CT] before 1782, when his widow, Abigail, married Samuel Garnsey... On 5 February 1789 Stephen Lockwood (with no Sr. or Jr.) "of Greenwich Old Society" (east of the Mianus River) sold to Samuel Garnsey, presumably his stepfather, a two-acre parcel "with all my right in a dwelling house standing on same..."

A stone in the Tomac Burying Ground, a.k.a. Old Sound Beach Cemetery, gives birth and death years for a Captain Timothy Lockwood of 1735-1782.[7] This stone was certainly not known to Spencer Mead.[8] A stone was apparently uncovered in more research archeological research, giving Capt. Timothy Lockwood of the Connecticut State Troops, who died in 1782,[9] but it is apparent that what was discovered did not give a birth date. Someone must have added the stone now present in the interim.
