Hi Angela.

I noticed that on Hansen-23477, you used a FamilySearch tree as a source. Trees from sites like FamilySearch, Ancestry, Geni, etc... are not acceptable sources for Pre-1700 profiles. Many times there are sources within the trees/profiles, and that is what should be used. Here is the link to the Norway Project's sourcing guidelines. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Norway_Project_Reliable_Sources

The G2G forum is also a great place to ask for help or advice.

Thanks!

John

John,

FYI, the FamilySearch Community trees are different than the main FamilySearch one tree, in that they are not editable by the general public and are put together by experts that are familiar with that particular region. So I am confident that this particular source is a good one. However, I would not use it as my only source, which is why you will see that there are two other sources for this profile. I am a member of the Norway Project by the way. Angela

Hi Angela. Thanks for your reply.

Just about every project on WikiTree has any user created tree, whether it's FamilySearch, Ancestry, etc..., in their unreliable source list. This is from the Norway Project's Pre-1700 page Unreliable Sources section:

User-contributed family trees at sites like: FamilySearch, Ancestry, Geni, MyHeritage, Rootsweb, WikiTree, Geneanet etc.

  • A tree without sources is insufficient as a source for WikiTree profiles.
  • A tree with precise dates and places may be a good guide of where to look for original records. Please take the time to do so. In these cases it is courteous to give credit (under See also); however when the tree exists in multiple copies on the net you may not be crediting the original builder. Caveat: In quite a few cases, precise dates and places, particularly before 1700, may be signs of fabrication. Watch out for exact birth years and places before parish records exist.
  • When a tree does present sources, please take the time to look up the original sources. Give credit.

Using a tree in your Research Notes or in a =See Also= is acceptable, but they should never be used as a primary source.

Thanks!

John

Hi Angela,

Thank you for finding my great-grandparents.

Hi Angela!

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Welcome to Wikitree, Angela,

We are so happy you decided to upgrade to the Family Member level.

Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.

You mentioned that you don’t know much about your family tree yet. I assume you are new to genealogy. No problem! Every genealogist is a beginner at some point.

Take your time, keep track of sources and ask questions. Check here for tips.

Questions? You can always use the G2G link in the Help Menu to find answers.
