Kathryn Magnolia Johnson was an American political activist who began working as a teacher before becoming one of the first members of the NAACP. [1]

Kathryn born the daughter of Walter Johnson and 'Lucinda Jane McCown Johnson.

Research Notes

Both her birth record and her passport application agree on a birth date and place of 15 December 1878 in Darke County, Ohio.[2][3]

She stated on her passport application that her father was Walter Johnson, who was born in Kentucky and died "near Greenville (Ohio) in 1879."

Her birth record lists her father as "unknown" and mother as Louisa Johnson.

Addie W. Hunton, Kathryn M. Johnson, and Helen Curtis were the only three known black women the U.S. government officially permitted to travel to France during WWI. While there, they ran YMCA canteens and leave stations catering to African American soldiers.
