Lewis was born in 1880. He passed away in 1957.
The 77-year-old president emeritus of the institution here was speaking to the University Club there when he collapsed. He retired after a long career as an educator in 1946 and lived In Winter Park, Fla., at the time of his death. Officials at Mary Baldwin hailed Dr. Jarman as one of the most influential leaders in the history of the school. Dr. Jarman was president of Mary Baldwin from 1929-46. Dr. Jarman came to Staunton in 1929 to establish the school as a standard four-year liberal arts college and to secure its accreditation as such. In a statement Sunday Mrs. Thomas H. Grafton, dean of the college, said Dr. Jarman had "devoted himself to this end with energy and ability … within a very few years he saw the college win recognition by the highest agencies in American education.” Dr. Samuel R. Spencer Jr., college president, said the student body and faculty members will gather for a memorial service during one of the daily chapel programs this week. In 1901, Dr. Jarman became acting president of Granberry College in Texas. Later he became a banker and farmer in Covington, Ga., and in 1929 returned to education.
