Thomas emigrated free to Sydney, Australia on Jan 1822 on the "Minstrel" with wife and family, and mother in law. Thomas was appointed the Commissariat Storekeeper at Bathurst, a position he resigned in 1823; his estate on the Macquarie River near Bathurst was known as Blackdown.^{[17] [18][19][20]}

Thoms died at his lodgings in George Street, Sydney on 27 May 1837 aged 56. He had been living at "Blackdown" Bathurst.^[21][22][23]
