Biography

Ora Haley served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: Jul 07, 1864
Side: USA
Regiment(s): 1st Maine Militia State Guards
Ora Haley was involved in the "Wild, Wild West," part of the westward expansion of the United States. Join the Wild Wild West Project.

Ora Haley began his life in East Corinth, Maine, just under 20 miles outside of Bangor. At 19, in 1864, he served in the 1st Regiment, Maine Militia State Guards, Company A.[1][2] Company A served for 3 months stationed at Fort McClary.

After completing his service, he went to Iowa, and eventually found live as a bullwhacker enjoyable. In 1865, he drove the bull team west to Denver, staying on in Denver. By 1868, he found himself settled in Wyoming and beginning to help shape the political landscape of the territory.[3]

In 1880, he founded the Two Bar brand, and over the next decade grew the Two Bar Ranch to become the largest individual range and cattle owner in Wyoming and western Colorado[3]. He was one of the primary cattle barons who struggled with the infamous Ann Bassett, including the hiring of Tom Horn for the suspected murder of Matt Rash and Isam Dart. When Ann Bassett was placed on trial in 1913 for cattle rustling, it was Ora Haley's cattle she was accused of stealing.

He was a political leader in Wyoming, elected to the 2nd legislative assembly of House of Representatives for the Territory of Wyoming in 1869[4][3]. He also served on the first Wyoming state senate from November 12, 1890 through January 10, 1891. [5] He remained a firm Republican throughout his life.[3]

In 1913, he sold most of his range and other businesses and retired to the Haley House in Denver, Colorado[3], where he passed away in 1919.[6]
