Biography

WikiTree Day
WikiTree Day Attendee: 2023
I was born in Te Puke, Bay of Plenty, NZ where my father was teaching mathematics at the local high school. I am the youngest of three children. The family returned to Auckland when I was three and purchased a house at 15 Ellerton Rd in Mount Eden which was to be my home for the next 6 years.

I started school at Maungawhau, walking down Ellerton Rd to the school each day with my brother and sister. Our house had a large back yard and I loved to play on the swing and slide set that my grandfather had built for us. I also loved the spreading plum tree in the back garden. I remember a tamarillo tree (we called them tree tomatoes then, and I didn't like them!), a grapefruit tree which provided breakfast for months of the year. Mum and Dad had a good vege patch back then. My sister and I shared a bedroom. I remember being very scared of sirens: ambulances and police often ran along Mt Eden Rd, and I would call out for Mum or Dad. One or other would come and reassure me that if our house was on fire, I would know long before sirens were heard.

One day we arrived home from church to find fire engines outside the neighbour's house where my friend, Va'a lived. Her brothers had been playing with fireworks and had accidentally set fire to their garage. I remember feeling quite superior to those foolish boys.

During these Auckland years we spent a lot of time with our Green cousins, with our mothers being sisters and not living too far away. As adults, we remain in touch with all our cousins (Green, Duley and Carr) to a great or lesser degree.

I remember little of Grandma Duley, as she died when I was quite young, but I do remember walking to the top of Ellerton Road to meet her off the bus when she came to visit me and Mum. I remember her as a warm, quiet, and hardworking presence, perhaps a little care-worn from the difficulties of her life. She knitted many of my jumpers and sewed clothes for us, having beena tailor in her early years. Grandma Duley died, aged 64, after a brief illness.

I also have a clear memory of being taken by Grandpa Goulstone to one of his Bible-in-Schools classes where, as a four-year-old, I sang for the school children. And I remember being at his home in Newhaven St, Ellerslie, especially bumping down the green painted concrete front steps on my bottom with my siblings. The steps seemed enormously high, but from recent drive-pasts it wasn't a big flight at all! We'd sometimes be at Grandma and Grandpa Goulstone's house for Sunday dinner after morning service in the Brethren Chapel (Robert St for my grandparents; Wiremu St for us). Mum says that after lunch, Grandpa would ask Grandma who hadn't been at the morning service, and those names would make up his Sunday afternoon visiting schedule.

In the few years I knew Grandpa, he and his brother, Roy, were operating as mechanics and car salesmen as Goulstone Brothers Ltd.

Grandpa had angina for some time, and I'm told the night he took more seriously ill, he didn't wake up Grandma so as not to bother her. By the time morning came and he was taken to hospital by ambulance it was too late and he died before my father could get there. At time of his funeral, which I didn't attend, I was in the car with my cousin, Melanie, and Mel was crying. I said to her, "Don't worry, Melanie, we'll see Grandpa in heaven." Four-year-old cuteness. Robert St Chapel missed Grandpa greatly when he passed, also at age 64. He had been a mainstay in Bible Class teaching, visiting and caring for the congregants, as well as Bible-in-Schools.

Grandpa Goulstone died just over a year after Grandma Duley, so this was a hard time for my parents. Passing on at age 64 seems way too young - my father-in-law died at that age, shortly after retiring, and now that I have passed the big 6-0 myself I have a new appreciation for the brevity of the lives of these three dear people.

I started school in 1967, the year NZ changed to decimal currency, so I never had to learn the complications of mathematics in pounds, shillings and pence. Good timing!

I took a walk around Maungawhau School playground in about 2019. Much has changed - the old stone main building has long gone, being demolished in 1979 - but there was still a lot I recognised.[1] Mum, being a primary school teacher, would occasionally be asked to do relief work at Maungawhau after all of us were in school. I remember the playground with its big old trees which were the "girls' trenches", and the line of trees along the stone wall that marked the boundary were the "boys' trenches". A hangover from the war years, but they conveniently provided gender-segregated play areas for the students of the 1960s. I spent many lunch hours in the girls' trenches making mud pies among the roots of the trees.

Other school memories include the annual fair with candy floss, sausages, toffee apples (the apples were always a disappointment - soft and floury), a white elephant stall, and the highlight - the fancy dress parade. One year I went as "Buttons and Bows." My infant teacher was Mrs McArdle, but I also clearly remember Miss Hart who was my Std 1 teacher - my first year in the main school. She had a very trendy 1960s hairstyle with long bangs, and she and I did not always get along. I remember standing in the hallway outside the classroom - I'd been turfed out, probably for talking too much - and feel so very embarrassed when the principal, Mr Eric Boggs, came past. He didn't ask any awkward questions, but invited me into his office and gave me a task to do that required visiting a number of different classrooms including my own. I remember feeling quite smug as I walked back into Std 1 with an "important message" from Mr Boggs. It was a small victory over crabby teachers. Mrs Brunt (I can picture her but can't be sure the name.) was my teacher in Std 2, my last year at the school. She was Mormon, which intrigued me. (Being from a conservative religious background myself, I was absolutely sure she was not "Christian"!) She was very kind, though, and I enjoyed that year greatly. I was quick to learn and often had time leftover in class which I usually used for reading.

A bombshell came at the end of 1970 when our family moved away from Auckland to a new position Dad was taking up in Palmerston North.

(to be continued) 12 Feb 2020

I graduated BA from the University of Canterbury in 1983.[2] My major subject was History.

Ian and I have been married since 1985, and have four adult children (including identical twin sons), and three grandchildren. Ian was born in London at Charing Cross Hospital. He emigrated to NZ in 1973 with his parents and younger brother. We have a number of Viney and Bowrey relatives in the UK and visit occasionally. Our last trip together was in 2016, though Ian popped back in 2019 when a Viney uncle passed away.

I have worked on-and-off in administrative roles - mostly "off" because I didn't work after having kids until they were well into school. Ian's work life was spent in computer technology - in recent years with a joint venture between Trimble and Caterpillar.

We met in a choir in our late teens and have lived most of our married life in Christchurch, NZ, but in 2019 took over running a small retreat centre in Little River on beautiful Banks Peninsula, where we host groups an individuals wanting some space to recharge in various ways.

My parents, Maureen (nee Duley) and Allan Goulstone, are doing well in their late-80s. We make sure we visit them each week when we're visit Christchurch, only a 45 minute drive away.

Hi Kathy, you have a red category from the New Zealand sticker, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Goulstone-18#categories, could you change the parameter to Mt Eden (not Mount Eden). Many thanks, regards, Margaret, Categorization project volunteer.

Have had a look at Bdm Ann Jane Morrow born 1888 is Ann & Robert Morrow’s daughter

Anne Jane Morrow Born is 1868 is Jane & Henry Morrow’s daughter. Same name, same spelling but two different people have added more information on profiles as were lacking, thank you for that Happy New Year

No I do not have anything paper certificates for the Ann Morrow but I notice that her information gets mixed up with others and it takes a little bit of sorting out what is what. Cause people repeat other people’s information which is incorrect, it all gets mixed up. there is a couple of profiles that has happened to. Will look for you on Bdm NZ records, that is all I can do and another site
Hello Kathy... i have a Maunder family history website which contains almost 90,000 Maunder descendants, including spouses and partners. A couple of thousand of these are/were in New Zealand but I have no record of Marjory Maunder. I feel sure that her parents can be found on my website. I hoping youmight like to contact me at [email address removed] - Best wishes, Allen Maunder

Hi, could you edit the template so the place in one of the NZ stickers is Palmerston North, Manawatu-Wanganui? THanks. Right now, it's got the wrong name (see the red-linked category below) Much appreciated.

Hi Kathy,

Thanks for having a big heart and adopting the Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention those profiles need.

Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources, merge duplicates, clean up gedcom biographies, and interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!

Hi Kathy. I've had to revert your edits to lawyer James Galbraith and his wife because you confused him with newspaper owner James Galbraith.
Hi Kathy,

You have been doing some great work here during the past weeks! I've noticed that you added quite some pre-1700 ancestors from England lately, and I was wondering if you already contacted the England Project. In general, creating pre-1700 profiles is subject to somewhat stricter requirements (e.g. an unsourced family tree is not, in general, considered reliable pre-1700), and the people in the project have a lot of experience with these profiles, so I think it would be a good idea to coordinate with a project (on g2g, for instance) before adding more pre-1700 profiles. Thanks! Filip

Hi Filip

Thanks for your message. I finally have time to upload some of the family information I have here from almost all branches of my tree, and make it available to others, so I am glad to do so.

Thanks for your note about pre-1700 profiles. I haven't been in touch with the England Project and am not sure how to do that. Maybe you could help me or put me in touch with someone? I haven't quite figured out yet how the projects work in practice...

I had been thinking that uploading what I have would be a start towards getting some more direct sourcing, but maybe I should take another approach. I know this data has been uploaded to other genealogy sites, and claims to have been well sourced, but the publication itself isn't so clear on what was sourced where, so I have been conservative in the description of the book.

Happy to take advice! Cheers Kathy

PS Sometimes links don't work in emails. You can always find a link that works in the public comments on your profile.

Hi Kathy,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working within the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Your family tree suggests that the England Project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to review other possibilities. Read the goals and tasks of the projects and join those which are a good fit.

Have questions? Click my name, then ask in the comments on my profile.

By the way, because of the way the messaging service works at WikiTree, we don't get notified about comments you put on your own profile. A greeter might notice it in the guest feed but once you became a member you don't show up there anyore. That's why it's recommended to post to the public comments on the other person's profile.

Kathy,

I see you have made family connections to May Edwards (Edwards-6116). Unfortunately, your connection is in error as May was born July 16, 1928 in Virginia and died April 17, 2001 in Henrico County, Virginia. She was married to Clyde Thomas and resided in Virginia her entire life.

I hope you will not be offended by my corrections to May's profile.

Thanks, Charlotte. I've been interested in genealogy since childhood and seem to have become the repository for all kinds of family records and objects. I've had a family tree on my PC for over a decade and from time to time have looked for an online option. This is where I have landed for now!! I am a person of sporadic interest in family history, but as I get older it's more interesting. :-)
You are now confirmed! :) Hope you enjoy this site as much as I do as it is a lot of fun and there are tons of great people collaborating. Especially fun connecting to the BIG tree and finding fellow WikiTreers as cousins! ;)

Check out our New Member How-To pages to get started! :)

PS. How did you get into genealogy? :) I became interested in Middle School but didn't follow up on it until after I got married. :)
