John founded J. Furphy and Sons, and invented the well-known "Furphy Tanks". The water tanks were constructed at Shepparton, near Melbourne. Te Australia soldiers who delivered water to the troops at Gallipoli in 1915 were a notorious source of rumours and gossip, speculating and inventing their own "news" when there was no real news to be had; giving rise to the popular expression "to tell a furphy." [16][17][18] The tanks were much-used during the war on Gallipoli and in Egypt.[3]
John died in September 1920 at Albert Park Melbourne South, Victoria, aged 78.[2][17]
