My One-Place Studies:

I live in British Columbia, Canada, but I have research interests in several different places:

  • Norway - my paternal grandfather Peter Fremmerlid emigrated from Norway to Canada in 1929 with his parents. His ancestors are from Møre og Romsdal county, primarily the parishes of Volda, Hjørundfjord, and Ørsta.
  • Quebec - my 2nd great-grandfather Pascal Lebel was born in Quebec then migrated to the USA about 1874. Many of his ancestors migrated from France to Quebec in the 1600s including several Filles du Roi.
  • Acadia - my 2nd great-grandmother Henriette Williams was born in New Brunswick, where her Acadian ancestors settled after the Expulsion of the Acadians. She descended from several Acadian First Families who first settled in Nova Scotia and her mysterious Williams line is thought to be from England.
  • Scotland - my great-grandmother Mary Saunders migrated from Scotland to Canada in 1912. Her ancestors are primarily from the counties of Perth, Clackmannan, Kinross, and Fife in the Central Lowlands.
  • Germany - my maternal grandparents migrated from Germany to Canada in the 1950s. The ancestors of my great-grandfather Alfred Nieke were from Silesia, Prussia (present day Poland). My great-grandmother Hertha Hengst and her ancestors were from Saxony, and my grandmother and her parents Hermann Freitag and Meta Peters were from present-day Saxony-Anhalt.

Lookup Requests:

  • I own the newer set of bygdebøker (farm books) for Volda, Møre og Romsdal, Norway, "Busetnadssoga for Volda". They are not available online, and I'm willing to take lookup requests.

Sources

Hi, Valerie, thanks for jumping in with Dora Downey. How sure are you that she is the one who married James Downey?

The census puts her as daughter of Hawkins which would mean she did not have mother Josephine Chaisson and her LNAB should be Hawkins.

The daughter of Dora Downey is a live person who made these profiles. This means we have changed her mothers name and removed a presumed grandmother. I'd like to be really sure about this. Could you find the connection? Oh! As I was typing this I see you added her back. Thanks, Cindy

The 1945 census seems to tie the family together, because Dora’s husband was listed as the son-in-law of Wallace Hawkins. Dora looks like she was born before her mother Josephine married, which would explain why her last name at birth was Chaisson as originally entered. Unfortunately there don’t seem to be any online records for her birth/marriage/death, so some reliance on the original data and online trees may be necessary for this fairly modern profile.

Hello cousin,

Thank you for finding and formatting the sources for me for Luc-Adolphe Breau. It's been difficult for me to do so easily on mobile, and I have been relying on one of my family name sites (which do have some sources, but I would need to go download them and verify some things which I haven't had the time for lately). I appreciate your work. :) I'm still new to Wikitree and figuring out how to do this efficiently!

I hope you have a wonderful day.

It's time for the One Place Studies Project Check-In!

We've put together a survey for you to fill out to check in with you, it will only take a moment as there are only a few questions. Filling out the survey lets us know you are still interested in coordinating your study and provides an opportunity for you to share any suggestions you may have for the project.

If you have decided to step away from your study, please reply to this comment to that effect.

Valerie,

Thank you for helping in the two very similar couples Pierre and Pierre with same last names and same wives first names with different parents and coordinating with two memorial managers.

Thank you Valerie for your many excellent updates to the Acadian profiles, helping us make them the best that they can be. Your research notes indicating that the baptism records could not be found in the Register of St. Charles aux Mines are helpful and appreciated. There are discrepancies between the transcription of those records available in Canadiana Heritage and the original register in Baton Rouge. I don't have access to the original source but have asked someone who does to see if the records you were seeking are in there. I will complete your notes if they are found.

Thanks Gisèle, I did wonder if the transcriptions at Canadiana Heritage might have missed a few entries from the original register so that would be helpful. I've been systematically going through the St-Charles-des-Mines registers and making sure each entry is attached to a WikiTree profile with a full source citation. As I match up the WikiTree IDs to the records I've also been looking for any profiles with exact dates in Grand Pré that don't have a matching record in the Canadiana Heritage source. I'm making a spreadsheet that I'll share in the Acadians google group when I'm done :)
That’s wonderful! Thank you.

Thank you Valerie,

My ancestors also came from the southern Russian Mennonite Colonies, but I believe the Thiessens and Buhrs came much earlier to Mountain Lake, Minnesota, which I believe was another Mennonite Colony. I think they had too many children to find land for, and two of the families (at least), migrated to Saskatchewan, Canada, around 1900. (At that time, Saskatchewan and Alberta had not yet cut out borders or taken their names. That happened in 1905. The Western half of Canada was labeled Northwest Territories and settlers could obtain 160 acres if they could fulfill the homesteading requirements over the next five years.)

Do you have any information about Thiessens, or others like Penners, etc., migrating to Mountain Lake, Minnesota, about mid-1800s?

If you are interested you can look at my website, http://ebach.tribalpages.com. I have 16,700+ of my ancestors in that site (pass word is my husband's name, Andy) and you are welcome to visit it. You can also share information with me if you have corrections, or new names.

I was born in Saskatchewan, but I now live in Florida.

Hi Gwynn, my husband Steven Penner (Penner-1275) is the one with Mennonite ancestry, I'm researching his ancestors. I do know of one of his ancestors' children that migrated to Mountain Lake: Abraham Buhler (1817-1903). I haven't researched him much though.

My husband's ancestors all fled Russia in 1929/1930 and emigrated to Paraguay, then later emigrated to Canada.

Thanks, Valerie

HI, Valerie, I've been seeing your contributions to Acadian rofiles and want to thank you for adding sources and even blockquotes for them. Many people take a long time to learn WikiTree but you seemed to have gotten the hang of it quickly. I see you have some Acadian families in your background. Perhaps you'd like to take a look at the Acadian Project information and our two best sources pages. I've found them invaluable.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Acadians https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Acadians_Project_Reliable_Sources https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:Census_links_and_citations&public=1 Plese don't hesitate to ask me, any of the leadership team, or make a comment on any profile if you have questions, or find information that doesn't line up - we very much appreciate collaboration! Best wishes, Cindy Bourque Cooper, co-leader, Acadian Project.

Hi Valerie,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles that you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Hi Valerie

Thank you for adding a GEDCOM. The GEDCOM does not automatically populate your tree it generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through either accepting or rejecting all suggested matches, once that has been done, you add any remaining names manually

The GEDCOMpare process guide has tips on how to use the data in your file most efficiently.

For those using Chrome or Opera browsers, there is a tool that can help with the formatting of profiles which have been created through GEDCOM, so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.
