Thomas Joseph Cullinan Fitzmaurice (1898 - 1977)

Biography

Thomas was born in July 1898 at or about North Fitzroy, in the Colony of Victoria, in what was soon to become Australia. He was the son of William Fitzmaurice and his wife Catherine (nee Duggan).

Thomas Joseph Cullinan Fitzmaurice known as Tom, was an Australian Rules footballer in the (then) Victorian Football League (VFL). He played at different times for the Essendon, Geelong and North Melbourne Football Clubs in a career spanning 1918 - 1935.

He also served as Geelong's Captain-Coach in 1928 and later North Melbourne's joint Captain-Coach in 1934 and 1935. Thomas was named in Essendon's Team of the 20th Century, and in 1996 he was inducted into the Essendon Hall of Fame as a Legend. And he also represented Victoria at State level 12 times, as well as once for New South Wales. In 1996 Tom Fitzmaurice was also inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

Thomas Fitzmaurice appears to have married twice

Initially in 1925 to Mary Joseph Griffin.

Then in 1942 to Thelma Caroline Wall, who passed away in 1959.

He passed away in late December 1977 and was laid to rest at the Melbourne General Cemetery in Carlton, Victoria.
