John Collins was born on June 08, 1717 in Newport, Rhode Island, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Collins. He studied law, became a law advocate of considerable reputation and was an active patriot of Rhode Island during the American Revolution. He married Mary Avery daughter of John Avery of Boston, and his daughter Abigail married John Warren. Collins died at Newport and was buried on his farm, "Brenton Neck", near Brenton Point in that city. [1]

He was a delegate to Congress; and an assistant to the General Assembly. Also he paid for services rendered. [2]

He died on March 04, 1795 in Newport, Rhode Island, United States.

Footnote: "Governor John Collins was engaged in business in Newport prior to the Revolution. In 1774 he was elected an Assistant. In 1778 he was a delegate to the Continental Congress, and in 1786 he was taken up by the paper money party, and elected Governor in opposition to Governor Greene; but in 1790, having given offense to his party by casting his vote in favor of the Federal Constitution, he was dropped by those who had previously supported him."
