John Chute was born in the Byfield section of Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts in June 1720[1][2] and grew up there. He was the son of Lionel Chute and Hannah (Cheney) Chute.[3] He moved to Hampstead, Rockingham, New Hampshire and there married Judith Foster - dau. of Benjamin and Sarah (Woodworth) Foster - on November 26, 1745.[4][5] He was one of the eight Surveyors of Highways in Hampstead in 1757 and was also a "tything man."[6]
In 1759-60 he was among the New England Planters who went to Nova Scotia to take up land vacated by the French.[7][8] He went to Granville Township, Annapolis County and settled on a farm a mile below Bridgetown.[9] He was a pioneer Baptist in the province and by profession was a blacksmith and farmer; likely the first ironworker to settle in Granville.[10] He appears in the 1770 Granville census; he and his son Samuel are both listed as heads of households in the township.[11] He died in November 1791.[12][13] His wife survived him and died November 1808 at age 83.[14]
