Biography

Charlotte was born on the 30th November 1795, in Greenfield Street, Mile End, Stepney, Middlesex the daughter of James Chater and Elizabeth (Groves) Chater.^[1]

She was baptised on 27 Dec 1795 at Coverley Fields, Mile End New Town, Stepney, London by John Cottingham.^[2][3]

Her birth was registered at Dr. Williams' Library, a non-conformist Register on the 7th April 1812 and her date of birth was recorded as 30th November 1795.^[4]

1841 Census on the 6th June 1841 Charlotte was running a Preparatory School at 16 Hanley Road, Islington, Middlesex. The 8 pupils named in the census being Thomas Dennison (9), Edward Dennison (7), William Reed (9), William Chater a distant nephew (8), Frederick Chater a distant nephew (6), William Gray a distant nephew (8), Walter Barnard a distant nephew (8), and John Miles (6). Also living there were Ann Miller (25), Elizabeth Grosvenor a distant cousin, and Sarah Williams (15).^[5]

Charlotte was named in the Will of Hannah (Leathley) Chater. The will was written in 1833 with a codicil signed in 1838 and was proved in 1844 when her aunt Hannah Chater died: fifty pounds to each of the nieces of my said late dear husband the daughters of his three brothers except Maria Chater the daughter of of late Mr James Chater Viz to the four other daughters of Mr James Chater Eliza the wife of Mr John Wilson now at Sydney, Australia Emily Chater spinster Whitehaven Charlotte Chater spinster Tottenham and Anne Chater Spinster Ludgate Street ...to the said Maria Chater a legacy of two hundred pounds.

Charlotte died aged 52 in 1847 and was buried on the 27th August 1847 at Bunhill Fields Burial Ground, Islington, Middlesex used by non-conformists. The burial register stated she was in her 52nd year and her body was brought from Finchley Road.^[6]
